The contracts aren't all that different. I think Staal has one more year, and his cap hit is less than a million dollars more.

Still quite a difference, Considering that Staal makes $5.7 million for 5 more years and Ericsson makes $4.25 million for 4 more years. Probably before all is said and done any ways most likely Ericsson will be joining his buddy Franzen on LTIR any ways.

Uh staal has 5 more years on his deal and is making well over a million more than Ericsson. So no...

regardless of what is agreed to or not re original prop
the deal we will make is
Girardi + Raanta at 50% = half mil
for
Howard
comparable $ #s, RW get an actual righty D for 3rd pair, 2hd in pinch, who is fine at 8-12 mins (not AV system and like 25 mins per) while jettisoning a guy they no longer want

Rangers similar, but move a guy w/a NMC, who should waive for Hockeytown, while hoping to up Howard's game via coaching specialist

As to Staal, I could see him ALSO being a fit.
Jurco + cap dump is fine, just have to haggle who exactly and what #s

I see colorado as other possible landing site, but just looking for roster flexibility here, not max return. Anything ballpark that works is fine.

Again Detroit doesn't just need any defenseman good or bad, they have a bunch of decent middle-bottom pair D. They ONLY need a legit top pairing D. Nothing less.

fair enough
but Raanta would be your #1 G and removing Howard is strong enough inducement regardless.

Staal is another matter.
This guy, substantially back, but not 100% as before, eye injury, was once best pure shutdown D and a legit 1D. That was then and this is now, but factoring in how much better they would be if they didn't play under AV, it is a basis for thought. You never have enough D, and if the only asset really surrendered is Jurco, who is surplus, it may be worth to consider.

Mrazek is the Wings #1

It's not that it's a terrible trade there's just no need. Detroit literally already has too many D. Howard's contract sucks but at least he still has a role and some redeemable qualities. Has ability to step in and be #1 if needed. Staal would just force a kid with potential like Marchenko or Ouellet to sit in the press box all year without solving the need for a top pairing D.
