You can only buyout someone who has a cap hit of 4 M or higher in the second window, so I do not see that happening with the NYR.

My initial thought when I saw his name on the list was that the team asked him to file for arbitration and they'd already agreed to this contract. Just having a player file for arbitration provided some extra flexibility to execute a buyout if absolutely necessary.

What if someone had offer-sheeted Lafrenière for $4-5m? The team would match, but they'd need to clear cap. Unlikely scenario, but not a bad idea to guard against it anyway.
