We still have the options to take a short term NHL salary dump back. We will need some actual NHL players that can step in. Id imagine all the big salaries are safe but guys like Schenn, McCarron, Smith, and Sissons still got a shot to move

TBH I'll be surprised if anybody else moves. Pleasantly surprised. But without retention I'm not sure we get much value back for the guys with term. They might be worth more at next year's TDL? I imagine we'll be in the same spot in the standings, so if it does turn out they don't get moved this year, we still have the next one to look forward to.

We PAID to get a pick that might become a roster player in 2030-31.

A 2nd next year with no retention, ok. A pick this year if retaining ... extending the failure period is never a good idea. This is a team that even when picking defensemen when at their peak of selecting ... took Klein before Weber.

We obviously weren't getting the 2nd right now without the retention.
The choice was, "pay"( money that was already effectively spent when the contract was signed two years ago) and get a more desirable return right now, versus holding on to him and risking other teams filling their needs with other players and getting a worse return.

So let's wait and see what other sellers get for similar players and it will become apparent whether this was a good trade or not.

The only way this really bites us is of there is some really great offer out there that requires a retention spot. But I can't imagine what that would be. Schenn is probably the only other chip we move that isn't a "hockey trade" and he should be moveable without retention and the return will be less in any case

I'm choosing (maybe foolishly) to believe Trotz has the ability to move one of the bigger contracts without retention if he used it here.

I may be wrong, but I Joey's retention is removed if his grievance fails. I would think the NHL and Nashville would be motivated to get that done soon.

To that end the real stupid use of the slot is Ekholm at only $250k

Let’s get Novak and Oreilly outta here if we can get high picks for them. Heck is Nyquist is worth a second in a deep 2026 draft who knows what we can get for Oreilly and Novak. I just say we keep josi and Forsberg as the guys for young players to look up to for leadership. Even stammer and march for that matter. Trading one of the latter two looks bad for future free agent signings.

I wouldn’t mind retaining sissons as a lifelong pred as well.

Would be happy to see mccarron finally gone as well as Schenn.

I even entertain the idea of evangelista who’s an rfa that could use a change of scenery while he still has value.

What Trotz does will depend on whether he thinks we can rebound and be good next year. If he thinks we can then he should keep Novak and O'Reilly. They both have 2 years left on their contracts and if we are gonna try to compete(and quite frankly we have to try at least one more year) then we need both of them.

We really should keep 1 of RoR or Novak. We need someone that can center. Id rather trade off RoR due to age.
Stamkos, Novak, Svechkov, Sissons, McCarron will be the centers until the next crop is ready. Misa/Hagens/ect, Surin, Edstrom, Nilsson

His defense has gotten somewhat better but he's still basically a one way player, and even last year's production wasn't amazing in that context, let alone his dud of a year this year. ROR on the other hand probably shouldn't have that much value, but with his intangibles label some contender would probably overpay for him

Novak is a dime a dozen NHL player. 3rd line scoring center (on any decent team), weak on the defensive end, iffy on faceoffs, easily overmatched against quality opponents. Type of player that may put up some numbers in an elevated role on a crappy team, but not someone that will have a real part to play when it's time to be competitive again.
