What was the right contract?

Question, is Nylander tradable right now before his no trade kicks in on the new contact. Can he be moved before it starts.

Actually yes. It likely can be done. I would do it if the return was there. I really wouldn't care about the optics.

Because anyone with sense knows 37 games in a contract year is not real. Him doing it for the entire year wouldn't make it a good deal either.

We have YEARS of evidence that shows us what this (or any) player is. As soon as he's signed he reverts to what he's always been. He's a 9-10 million dollar player at best, if he didn't accept this he should've been traded.
Which completely misses the point.

Three games without a point means he's not worth the contract? Matthews and Marner have each gone three games without a point three times this year. McDavid went three games without a point. MacKinnon went four games with only two assists. I guess none of them are good either?

And they don't have the dubious benefit of playing with Bert and Ernie.

Didn’t Nylander say he would take a discount if others did?
Guess we know the score now.
Gonna need a brinks truck for Marner now.
Seems we are always paying more to be at the same spot.
Told you Nylander wasn’t taking 9 million while the others made 11.
He said he'd take a discount if Matthews did.

Matthews didn't.

QED.

Marner is going to get paid because he reached 600 points faster than any other Leaf in history. Hate on his personality and style all you want , he puts up points and he's a hometown boy. He's lived up to his pay bracket. You can't deny there's something to him being a regular pk'er and making an effort to contribute on D and round out his game. Not all elite players do that.
He's going to get paid because Shanahan basically guaranteed the core three would get paid.

Absolutely, I would look to trade him now before that no trade new contract kicks in. Dump it if you can.

I added that option to the poll.

What's wrong with that really?

Would you rather have 3 all stars capable of 100 points or spend the money on a bunch of mid players like Bertuzzi or get stuck paying a Timo Meier 9 million to not produce. I'm taking the 3 all stars every day.

Did he actually say that or is that how something he said was interpreted?
As far as I recall, that's what he was reported as saying, but I wasn't there.

Even if he didn't actually say that, why would he want to be the only one taking a discount (except for Rielly)?

Apparently they're the three most important games of his career lol, and ignores he got 3 points the first game after signing the deal. A few shots during the last couple games of his have been near misses, if one had gone in I suspect a number of folks would be quite right now.

He wouldn't. He sat out to get what he wanted last time, no reason to think he wouldn't try and get everything he could this time which he did,

I feel like this has really been beaten to death. I am not a fan of that contract but the excuse for it was that he is peaking and will hopefully brink some of his regular season magic to the playoffs this year. Are any complaints relevant if he has a monster playoff? Are any kudos misplaced if they get smoked in the first round again. Close the poll and reopen in May please.

I was legitimately worried he was going to go ice cold after signing that deal and he's now pointless in 3 straight.

The culture of this team is just that - get your money and check out.

This seems like a bit of an over reaction post from someone who is usually pretty level headed. Nylander and Matthews just signed their big deals and both are producing where they should. How can you write them off as mercenaries over a small slump. It will take alot more than 3 games for me to turn on them. They are just maturing and coming into their own.

rumor has it Modo was going to offer Willie 13/14m to come home , we should be praising him for taking a discount instead of bitching he's overpaid especially considering he's over a ppg which i've read endlessly is worth 11m min

Just having some fun, don't worry about it.

Truth is Nylander was going to go on a cold streak at some point in the season contract or not, I don't think it was any grand level of prediction. Great player but I don't know if he's 120 points level of great.

That is exactly it.

find a buyer for that new contract and sell fast! f*** the optics. Just get him out of here before it is too late.

Kind reminder William Nylander $6,96M AAV

Mitch "you thought $11M for RFA was bad, hold my beer" Marner will get 13.4 to make us forget about Willie, calling it now.

I’m a full on Team Willie guy all the way, trust his skills, upside, etc. but it is disappointing that he had so much consistency in the 37 games leading up to the contract, talked about how last year he took the foot off the gas and that accounted for the dip at the end of the year. So much self awariness. Personal and professional growth.

And the week after he signs the big long term we love you deal, he goes cold as the January weather and completely pushed out of any kind of impact. It’s just urgh, way to reward all that faith with this instant turd. Like FFS.

Yeah against the toothless Sharks. He'll get it back but it is funny that he hardly missed a beat before signing and then after signing and feasting on Shark meat for one game, he goes cold for 3 games.

For me, it’s not a great feeling to go to bat for a player you believe in, with new found maturity level, gets everything he wants and takes the week off and no shows the same old way…

I wouldn't expect this to last, he'll be fine but he'll never be worth his contract.
