This isn’t a ‘look at the bright side!’ type thread when our feelings about the Leafs are valid rn, but..

He really did show up these playoffs after his linemate looked like his career got ended.

With his huge role in our wins this series and amazing production (5 goals, 3 assists), I hope the Leafs’s coach next year makes it a priority to give this man the ice time boost both on ES & PP that he deserves.

Played himself a spot onto next year

Simultaneously, Marner did the opposite

Buy low sell high...Willy at his highest value he will ever be or will he grow even more?

He was our best player in the playoffs by a landslide - really put in an effort every shift and really stepped up when JT went down.

Naturally Dubas the wizz kid will trade him away as he's the only contract he didn't completely bungle so he still actually has value.

It's always down to the Marner vs Nylander debate, so here's the latest recap.

Nylander's cap hit is low enough that he can live up to expectations at a reasonable level of growth and he's a better natural athlete than Marner. Maybe not the 'ultra creativity' but he's stronger, bigger, can battle, has a shot and can carry the puck cleanly which sadly isn't always the case with Marner. He's been buried a little bit being demoted from the Original Big 3 to a Medium 2 behind the Matthews Marner Big 2. His utilization has been low and his regular season numbers haven't skyrocketed. He should be kept and trusted with more.

He broke out against a team that wouldn't have been in the playoffs in the regular season. Hurray.
Willy has been better the last year and change but I still think he's part of the problem culture-wise. I'd sell high.

I think a move with the core is coming... Rielly may not be back, but I expect one of the forwards to be gone...

If it happens to be this guy, I will be demanding Dubas be fired. If anyone has Shanahan's contact info please PM it to me.

Nylander at that salary, is a keeper without question.

His performance these playoffs deserves just that.

Still boggles me as to why Marner/Matty weren't split up.

Willy was on and ready. I hope he's here next year.

I like his growth, and he has been earning it.

I will take his passing over anyone's on the team, some might make pretty plays, but he gets the puck to target with speed and accuracy, carries the puck as good or better than anyone on the team, skates extremely well, sometimes doesn't push hard enough.

I could see him being moved, his contract is value added.

Deserves better than he gets in Toronto.

The second Dubas even thinks about trading Nylander over Marner. Fire him on the spot.
If he keeps his job after this......I can't even. But hey. MLSE was dumb enough to let a rookie run the team after drafting 1st overall so they're clearly not the sharpest crayons in the box. At least they got rid of those old guys.

He's always been good in the playoffs but he seemed to hit a new gear this year, our best forward by a very large margin.

One of the few bright spots for this season.

He played well. Now is the time to sell high. He will never get another easier matchup in the playoffs.

He has absolutely not been good for the Leafs previously in the playoffs. He was fantastic this series, however and was the Leafs best forward. He deserves a ton of credit for his play this series and this season.

The best thing is, this still isn't his ceiling. He will be even better than this soon.

I think you're wrong here. Even if you forget about the fact that he was the only one of our forward "core" to actually produce (5 goals 3 assists in 7 games). Nylander did things that even he doesn't typically do. He threw some some nice hits and seemed to play on Turbo for most of the games.

Fair if you think we should sell high, but i'd say he isn't part of the problem. Always the last guy to leave the rink, always their for the optional skates, and while you're right he put up points against a team that wouldn't have normally made the playoffs, what does that say about Marner and Matthews who combined just barely beat out Nylander's total points for the series.
