Why would the islanders do this? What piece excites the team from the habs to get the islanders to give up their best player AND captain?

Im not an Isles fan, but im guessing in this imaginary scenario where Tavares is on the move to MTL, Gally + is coming back or there is no deal to be made.

To Montreal

John Tavares

To NY Islanders

Max Pacioretty
Nikita Scherbak
2017 1st Rounder

Thoughts?

Montreal just doesn't have the pieces to acquire JT, IF the the Isles were interested.

IF the isles were looking to trade JT the package might look more like:

To Anaheim for Hampus Lindholm and Richard Rakell

To Colorado for Gabe Landeskog and Tyson Barrie

To Columbus for Brandon Saad and Zach Werenski or Seth Jones

To St. Louis for Colton Parayko and Jaden Schwartz

It's got to be proven young talent that makes sense from a hockey perspective.

Futures are a waste of time to offer.

And the only way the Isles would even contemplate trading him is if the owners clear house and sign off on the new GM starting over, which is a long shot given how many young players are already in the pipeline.

All those offers are not even close. Anaheim is not enough, maybe change Rakell with Getzlaf then that meant get you closer. Colorado change Gabe with Matt D. Columbus is pretty good and for St. Louis, they don't have the pieces to get the job done.

Getzlaf is not the type who I am looking for in this. He's the better player now than Rakell but he is 31 years old with a lot of mileage on him and a $9.25 million salary. Rakell's on a great trajectory and is 23.

Duchene versus Gabe is fine to debate.

Did you even check Schwartz's career numbers? Also a great trajectory.

You can add a prospect to each of these to make it more palatable but remember that the Isles are already owning an impressive group of young talent at Bridgeport and in Junior Hockey and this approach would make more sense than a Getzlaf for example. Opens up cap space since JT is getting $9 million at a minimum next contract. Everyone I named in those trades are proven already at the NHL level and are young except for Duchene, who is obviously the same age as JT.

I see a JT trade like when we traded LaFontaine . . . it was highly unpopular when done but the haul we got back ended up with the 1992 run. Sometimes the hockey trade works out very well as opposed to the futures type trade.

Why the heck are Habs fans suddenly so obsessed with getting Tavares on their team? We don't want to trade him and we don't need another proposal thread every other day.

Those were my first thoughts as well. JT is a franchise player who's proven over a number of years now, and still in his prime. He's one of the biggest assets in the league. You can;t just create a massive hole at center; you need to fill it with something reasonable, and at this point that's exactly what Galchenyuk is. THEN you sweeten it with a first round pick and a prospect.

Gotta get him before he leaves for Toronto :sarcasm:

I would definitely do it. Does anyone know if John Tavares is really being shopped?

and then add Galchenyuk. I suspect the guy you quoted meant Montreal doesn't have the assets they'd be willing to part with.

For Tavares? Why wouldn't we be willing to part with Sergachev? And Pacioretty? And Gallagher? And 2 1st? And Juulsen? And McCarron? Obviously not all of that.....but quite a few on that list?

I thought the going rate for a good centre is 5 x 1st round picks...not that we'd do it.

Yeah we do. Start with Sergachev.

Re-read what I wrote

Two PROVEN young NHL players. Not an 18-year old who has played 3 NHL games. Not someone who is older than JT.

Saad and Jones
Parayko and Schwartz
Etc.

But why would they say no to some serious rebuilding pieces?

I know you're trying to come up with hypotheticals that show just how valuable JT is to the Isles rather than make requests of teams, and you're certainly justified in doing that, and I do think it's best if y'all keep him (I'd say "I hope you keep him", but, y'know, division rival, go to hell ;) ), but sweet ****ing holy G-d Almighty hon we wouldn't pay that package for Connor ****ing McDavid let alone Tavares. :scared:

We have all the 18-20 year-olds we need, that's why. A trade of JT is to go after those PROVEN players in their early-mid 20's. JT does not get traded for FUTURES. He gets traded for a HOCKEY trade, not a FUTURES trade. Can't say it any clearer than that.

Thanks for the back-handed compliment

But I do think your team would deal Saad and Werenski for McDavid . . .
