Wahlstrom has to be one of my biggest whiffs. He just looked so good, and so destined to be a top tier goal-scorer at lower levels. He was always just so slick with the puck and so able to score from all over. But it just has not translated. I should've realized that he was just that "hotdog" player at lower levels that almost never translates unless they've got superlative tools (and he doesn't), but definitely did not clock that. One of those "learning experience" players when it comes to evaluation i guess.

He doesn’t have hockey sense.

This and his lack of explosiveness and agility, he was a swing at the time based on his shot, which is 100% NHL ready. However, his problem is he isn't dynamic enough to be more then a PP specialist in a bumper role, I still think he would mess even that assignment up though that's how bad his hockey sense is.

The major issue I saw is how he just looked lost with Barzal. No effort to get open and create a lane for himself to get a shot off while Mat would just cycle the zone on repeat until he turned over the puck/finally got a shot off. He reminds me of the kid who grew up that stood there waiting for a pass while slamming his stick on the ice until they gave him the puck and his over exaggerated wrist shot would work half of the time. Outside of that the kid would just glide around and hang because he’s “too good to play defense”.

I may be wrong but IMO, Wahlstrom is the slowest regular player in the league. Damn he’s slow. I’d love to see some advanced stats but it’s painful to watch him. Good tools, can’t skate or make his own chances

Wahlstrom has a all star shot both slapper and wrist, only problem is the rest of his game is sub average. If anyteam can figure out how to maximize Wahlstrom's shooting skills they might get lucky.

With the team rebuilding, the Flames should put in a claim for Wahlstrom. He's still young, and it's not like Kuzmenko is doing anything. That said, I think he gets claimed by someone below us in the standings.

Because he's still young enough at 24 to still have some potential, his salary is low. He's exactly the kind of guy a rebuilding team should take a flier on. What do they have to lose?

Not sure when he's playing again, but watch the Habs and look for David Savard.

He's easy to spot. You ever see a guy use pallets as snowshoes to get through sand while carrying a fridge on his back ?

It was funny watch the world juniors coach use this scrub on the PP over Caufield and having the resident HF hater on Caufield say it was worth while

Wahlstrom sucks and will be out of the league soon.

He wasn't good in the NCAA, wasn't good in the A, wasn't good at the U-20s and isn't good in the NHL.

Good for him to make it this far despite all that.

Now that I've dunked on him watch the Habs pick him up.

Roster spot to the guy they currently have and can develop. Even for a bad team you have to provide some kind of value, not just float around the ice waiting for the setup once in a blue moon. If I'm a rebuilding team that tries to get competitive like Sharks or Ducks, this is the last kind of guy I want on my team.
