After this disappointing season I think the Islander might need to make a couple tweaks. Just throwing this out there for a couple ideas but

NYI

Barzal
Beauvillier

Columbus

Jenner
Laine

This trade hopefully would give the Islanders the major goal scorer they need, they would need Jenner to replace Barzal as a Center though in Hopes one day Raty can one day be a top 6 center(and basically go with a 1-2-3 punch of Nelson-Pageau-Jenner till then). In the case of Columbus you keep hearing Laine's name being brought up so I figure where their is smoke there is fire.

NYI

2022 First (13th -assuming we don't win lottery)
Wahlstrom

Arizona

Chychrun
Crouse

From an Islander perspective Chychrun gives us the best top 4 in the NHL and Crouse can be a useful player who I think is just entering his prime and probably would excel in a Trotz run system. Arizona basically goes on a youth movement more.

Laine's stock is on the rise. It would be foolish to sell him now, even if it was for Barzal. Also, Jenner is their captain and a fan favourite from what I hear. I could see him retiring with CBJ.

Value is off on the second trade. I don't think the package is enough to get Chychrun alone (although it may be debatable), let alone get you Crouse as well.

EDIT: If you want a goal scorer, maybe target Boeser in VAN?

For added context - Jenner missed significant time this season due to a back injury.

If you think fans complain about how Trotz “treats” Whalstrom, they’re going to flip when Laine just coasts in the defensive zone and expects his teammates to do his work. Beau I can see as a trade target but Jenner isn’t who I’d be interested in as a return. He’s more of a complimentary player instead of another game breaker, which the Islanders need up front.

1st favors Jackets, 2nd favors Isles

Think Barzal is near untouchable, and Isles would be nuts to gut their C depth. Targeting a goal scoring winger & reallocating cap makes sense though

Agree with the poster who wrote the Wahlstrom/1st package might not be enough for Chychrun alone. Crouse is a valuable piece just on his own too

To the first proposal: CLB enthusiastically says yes, and the Isles say no.

To the second proposal: this is so bad for ARI that it makes me non-Coyotes fans want to cry. I’m not even sure the 13th overall + Wahlstrom is enough to get Crouse straight up. If I’m AZ, I’d rather extend him long term and maybe put a C on his jersey.

So the 13th + Wahlstrom is most definitely not enough for Chychrun. If you want Chychrun but (understandably) don’t want to give up Barzal or Dobson in return, ARI just isn’t interested.

We need to get a winger for Barzal, trading Barzal is absolutely stupid. Isles need to build around him
Wahlstrom is going to be the savior though. Well once he learns how to play on both sides of the puck and consistently do something instead of being streaker then Beau and Bailey combined.

I have no problem moving Wahlstrom, as long as hes part of a package for a quality player.

Neither do I. He’s starting to turn into Ho-Sang 2.0 on the ice. Barry tries to get him to fix things with his game and he keeps going back to the same mistake. Even Bellows is turning into a better all around player.

In a bubble that offer is good for Columbus. In real life, the Jackets are trying to get a center to play with Laine not trade him for a center. The FO has expressed interest in signing Laine long term and Laine has publicly expressed that the feeling is mutual and that he wants to stay in Columbus.

After the perception of players not wanting to be here, it would be foolish to trade a big time all star who wants to be here.

Not only all that, NYI NEVER even thinks about this unless Barzal expresses his intent to leave.

Fast forward to 2022 and watch some tape. Laine does not coast. He's no Selke winner but this doesn't come close to how he played this year. He's become much more engaged in all 3 zones.

Regardless, the offer sounds great, however, I don't think the CBJ does it. For one, Jenner is the captain and was a huge reason for their unexpected success. This team is tight and he's the leader. Laine played outstanding and showed his elite level skillset again this year. CBJ wants a center to play with him, not move him. I like the NYI pieces but just don't see this as a real life fit given all the other surrounding issues on the CBJ side. (By issues, I mean these two players hold more value in Columbus for various reasons).

The trade doesn’t work for either team. Barzal and Laine essentially just swap needs for each team but leave a gaping hole where they made that swap. I can’t see Laine being happy with Trotz as a coach based on how his systems are ran and the fact he’s a defense first type of guy who demands ALOT from his players in his own zone. As for Jenner/Beauvillier portion. This trade just doesn’t work for either team. Moving Jenner would be like the Islanders trading Anders Lee. Jenner is a good player but realistically slot in as the 3rd line center with the current Islanders lineup and another middle/bottom 6 forward just isn’t what the Islanders need.

There are very few teams I'd imagine Laine's style fits in on less than these last couple seasons of CBJ, but current day NYI with Lou and Trotz at the helm is one of them

Laine was a PPG and was much better in his all around play this season. All with no other real "superstar" on the roster. If he didn't fit with this roster he wouldn't be coming back.
