Both of these guys have been bright spots this year. Both guys have showed up every game. Parise was unbelievably snake bitten at the beggining of the year, but has come alive recently.

To whatever extent this season has been bad luck, I feel like there quite possibly some decline combined with that;

I mean it was only a matter of time; Lou came and built up with a lot of older players and much of his acquisitions have been older players.

It’s a team of a few solid and okay and one great scorer, none elite; their “identity” line is often one of their best and it’s some of the oldest players playing a style that doesn’t always age well;
a couple of their scorers on the older side and or have injury histories which can get riskier w age;
the game is speeding up, their scorers numbers weren’t especially great a few years ago when scoring was a bit lower, they’re definitely not special now

I feel like they’re at serious risk of having a lull of average seasons starting within the end few years that will be hard to get out trending up, unless they suddenly become a top UFA destination or nail a few trades

They shouldn’t rebuild/scorch earth obviously, but this would have been good year to take advantage of their already low standings and trade a older player or two to contenders in a sellers market, selling them on “bad luck this season” and their back to back impacts to the ECF and get some picks in this or next years draft or young players.

If they 100% commit to this core and it ages out before Barzals extension ends, and they don’t have a clear path to success by then they risk a tavares situation

Words can’t describe how much I hate Lou’s decision to defer collecting a much needed asset for Clutter.

Then he goes and doubles down by resigning him? Granted most of this deal can be buried but Cal will be 35 next year and having him stay productive and injury free next year is far from a given.

It was time to move on. Opportunity lost.
