Honestly, the destination that they want to trade you to will tell you whether you want to go there or not. Most of the time, players have no issue going to Philly. They are centrally located for travel purposes. So, easier on the body to recover. Most players are from the East so convenient to be closer to family.

But, in this case, with Krug, he knows that the team is rebuilding so not interested in playing in a losing environment.

Who is so arrogant that they'd demand to be traded for more value in exchange?

Personally, I'd rather go to a team that retains better players and assets around me than to have them send one of my better potential teammates away in exchange because it makes me look more "valuable".

Pretty sure those lists get submitted at the time the contract is signed. Potentially updated at each season interval (which would be July 1st). GMs should 100% know who is and isn't on the list....
typically there had not been any league-mandate standards for handling NTC's
you'd read occasionally about a team asking a player for his list

not sure if after the Dadanov nonsense, the league tightened up the rules

Why do you care who is going the other way so much. Only care what is there on the other team that you would be going to and their direction over the remainder of your contract should you decide to waive your clause.

Your contract is supposed to show your value. You get traded based on how worth your contract you are.

It’s up to the team. If a player has a full NTC like Krug, they’ll ask him to waive. If he balks at it, they may obviously ask what will change his mind? If he’s trying to determine where the other team is at, he may ask what the intentions of the other team are? That’s a fair question. At that point, it’s up to the team if they want to share it with him.

So they absolutely can. Most of the time agents already know what every team’s trying to do. Whether that’s rebuilding, whatever. But sure, they could trying to convince him. In this case, Armstrong is a pretty straight shooter, and likely gave Krug time to make a decision he respects either way, and wasn’t trying to twist his arm. He respects what the NTC means to a player.

If it's a trade for players they will tell the player what the deal is, because that is relevant to their decision to waive or not. If they have a friend on the team, or they are getting traded to a team about to do a full on tear down, etc.

I think most teams should start asking every player on their team to submit their NTC prior to the draft and just make it a team policy. Don't hurt feelings and don't waste time on deals that can never happen because of it. Just get a commitment early
It's not something teams can just ask for. It's something laid out in the CBA. If owners/gms want that they have to bargain for it and give something up.

Other fun questions...

Sign & trade. Rumors are LA may acquire PLD from Winnipeg in a sign and trade. Technically - LA can negotiate with PLD, but can't "sign" him till he's an LA player.

1. LA and Winnipeg do the trade. LA sends contract to PLD to sign as soon as trade is official....PLD now says "nope, sorry, changed my mind, I want more $$". Is he allowed? Can LA use this to cancel the trade, or are they stuck, since trade's already done?

2. If "sign and trade" implies PLD signs in winnipeg and then is traded to LA (probably to avoid above scenario, or maybe if an 8yr vs 7yr contract was in play) - and assuming contract includes a NMC - can PLD sign contract and right away say "sorry, NMC now kicks in - I changed my mind, no to LA find a different trade partner".

3. Similarly - could Winnipeg "sign and trade him to LA"...but as soon as he signs in Winnipeg, Jets say "hmm, thanks for signing, we changed our mind about LA trade. Enjoy being a Jet for next 7 years!"

I know some of these are quite far fetched and wouldn't happen, but still curious what's possible vs not.

1. PLD can change his mind without repercussion. LA can complain but I don't believe that's accepted basis for the NHL to void a trade. PLD and LAK are not allowed to make any sort of binding agreement to sign a new contract other than actually signing the new contract.

2. PLD is not eligible to have a NMC/NTC until 2024-25.

3. Yes the Jets can technically do this, but PLD would have solid grounds for a grievance that Winnipeg negotiated the new contract in bad faith. I think he likely wins such a grievance.

The due date for submitting the list does not need to be July 1st like the pay day for the signing bonus needs not be July 1st. The team and the player can agree on a different date, and in the examples that every now and then become public they seem to often do.

I think it would be more sensible (for the player) to submit such a list before the off-season trade hulabaloo starts in earnest soon after or even before the Stanley Cup Finals. The team obviously might like an outdated NTC list.
