Denisenko is weird.

Was always money at international level, yet so consistently pedestrian at KHL/junior level.
Looks like nothing has changed in the AHL.

Yeah, he was 15th OA in 2018. Quintessential boom or bust forward. He was said to have every tool--good skater, decent size, unreal hands, great playmaking vision, goal scoring, highly physical, confidence, and a great personality. But was also said to be a purely raw talent who was years away from NHL hockey.

In his Draft+1 year, he lit up the WJC, and Craig Button listed him as like the second best prospect in the world. I think the COVID season did him in. Florida was one of the few teams whose AHL affiliate fully canceled the season, so Denisenko spent like all his time on the taxi squad and occasionally got games with Syracuse. He needed North American ice time, but he never got it.

One of those "swing for the fences" on a flashy smallish skill player with big holes in their game type picks that people 'round these parts always declare the "steal of the draft". Then make repeated excuses for and continue to adore and value super highly even as they fail to establish themselves at the NHL level, multiple times over. Right up until they end up in a deal like this as a traded for imaginary magic beans future currency as an AHL move, and then disappear off to Europe/KHL.

Perfect example of a very skilled professional hockey player who just needs that extra second that doesn’t exist in the NHL. Good bet he’s lighting up the KHL this time next year.

Dramatic bystander: Won’t someone think of the considerations?!?

Wasn't this guy looked at as a top prospect for the Cats not long ago?

Craig Button was very high on him back in the day. This list is amusing to look back on.
