They dont need to trade him, Marner is my favorite Leaf but one of these guys has to chill the f*** out with the double digits AAV if theyre gonna improve this team and get cap space. Cant keep handicapping your team with big contracts and little cap space to work with to improve.

Rantanen went for 12m aav, state tax worth probably a mil or just under, so from chicago perspective they could probably offer 13-14m (bad tax premium, 5% state tax)

Easily. If another team offers 14M x 7 Years that would only be 98M in total dollars. If you split that by 8 years for the leafs, that's only a 12.25M AAV for them.

The real question is, if Marner is seeking 14M x 8 years with the leafs, would another team match that 112M over 7 years? If they do, that's a 16M AAV, which seems too high.

Realistically, I think other teams (like San Jose Calgary, Columbus, etc.) would offer 15M x 7 on the open market (105M). That would be 13.125 AAV over 8 years. So my guess is that Toronto would have to offer 13.25M x 8 years for him to stay.

I may be wrong, but I see him as a Phil Kessel level player. Elite, but not a #1 or #2 most important player in a team. In Kessel’s first cup year, he was the unfair advantage Pittsburgh had on the third line. Crosby on the first, Malkin on the second and Haglin/Bonino/Kessel feasting on the third. But Kessel was overmatched when he was the #1 guy in Toronto.

Matthews plays in the Atlantic division with the best teams in the league. He doesn’t get a free pass playing in the Pacific like the Oilers do.
