He's getting +12.5M on the open market on max term (7yr).
Cap is rising, teams are going to go a bit nutty with this stuff. The guy's going to give you 90+ points if he plays 80 games, he's first unit PP and can play the PK.

Right shot RW, so more valuable than your Leftie LW.

I think any team with cap is going to give this guy a poke and see if he wants to play there. I imagine there's going to be at least 18-20 teams that come-a-knocking, Toronto might be in best position to give him the extra year.

I honestly expect if this Rantanen thing blows up in Carolina's face, that they'll load up the truck for him. 14M+. They have no contracts that have to renew anytime soon for high end players.

Caps need to be on this! All stars are aligned to Washington. He’ll be the new face of the franchise after Ovie retires.

He already knows HC Carbery, the team is already in contention despite being in yr 2 of a retool, the new core is the same age as him, Caps have a lot of contracts coming off the books in the next 2 yrs, the prospect pipeline is top-10 in the league, he’d be a great compliment to Strome on the 1st line.

What GM is going to pay Marner $12.5M + AAV? All because he made a pass to McDavid at the 4 nations.

He is not worth that money.

On pace for 104 points... With the cap going up I would be comfortable somewhere between 11-13 per season... but if the Devils were splashing that cash, I would prefer Rantanen. We need size.

but I mean Marner and Hughes would be 120pts each kind of thing

Gotta sign Marner here , can’t risk telling him to wait to chase Rantanen who might not sign

I don’t like him at all. He feels he is bigger than the team. He is arrogant like you would not believe.
He does come across in interviews that it's never his fault. Talented guy but if you wanna be paid like the top players you gotta not only produce but take the responsibility for team when things don't go well.

This is an absolutely absurd take.

How many Americans have any idea they even have a hockey team in their city?

It was international news for a day. It would be talked about for years if America won.

Millions of people watched. It was the top story on channels for days.

If you spend all day on a hockey board you think it’s a big deal. I love it, but it’s a nothing sport internationally and in most of us.

That was a massive game.

I hope he goes to the highest bidder and it ain’t the Leafs.

Not a fan of paying 10M+ to passers who need goalscorers to be effective. At that range you should be driving your own line.

Counterargument - it was a mini-tournament involving four teams. :dunno:

Even if the Americans had won, it wouldn't have the staying power of the Miracle game from 1980, and I think both Olympic finals involving these two teams (2002 and 2010) still trump this most recent game.

As for Marner, I agree he'll likely be pushing for something north of $12 mil. Whether or not he gets that from the Leafs, who knows.

12.75 is the floor for Marner IMO and the Leafs probably give him 14+, He's not going to take a smaller % of the cap from his last deal and its going up a ton the next 3 seasons.

In a trade Rantanen for Marner. I know Marner is the better Big Game player recently but Rantanen was ok a couple years ago.

Can't wait to read the thread on July 2 after he signs for 14 mill over 7 with Colorado.
Would love to see him come to Vancouver in July. He's not worth Drai money at 14 but with the cap going up and that was the cost out there for him 13-14 I'd pull the trigger.

Dude plays every situation at a high level and is the playmaker we desperately need here.

I could see a line of EP ( who hopefully gets healthy and desperately needs a playmaking winger) Marner and Lekkerimakki or Debrusk tearing it up.

I love Boeser but when he's the best passer EP plays with, it's a problem, especially this version of EP who hasn't gotten his extra gear to create separation.

Those two would also be a hell of a shutdown line with their defensive acumen.
Plus both are high IQ players and my gut says they would work really well together.

I don't know why so many leaf fans shit on him so much especially about his playoffs where until last year his numbers were quite respectable.
He's also on pace for over a 100 points while playing selke level defense.

I still think he stays put in TO considering how much the cap is going up and the fact the team stayed elite all through the dead cap despite half their cap being tied up in four players now in three years it will be at 114 and Tavares will see his contract likely cut in half leaving only 3 guys making over 11 million.

It reminds me of the nuck "fans" who want to jettison EP out after his first real down season brought on by injury and a lack of a compatible winger that can create offense.
