You don't offer him or Tavares a contract until after the playoffs. Would be dumb to extend him now, he knows his time as a Leaf is on the line if he doesn't perform. He's been playing with a fire lit under his ass all year, last thing you wanna do is give him that security that he gets to stay on his favorite childhood team for another 4-5+ years.

Let's see how he performs in the playoffs and then decide. If we absolutely had to sign him now, offer him the same amount that he's currently making. He wants a raise? Show us you can get it done in the post-season.

I think if the leafs offerrd 12-13 in between hed be signed by now
Untill he gets an ultimatum we ll never know
I think the Leafs have offered 13 but Marner wants 14+ or he’s gonna see what offers are out there.

I think his current cap % would equate to 12.78m under next year’s cap. He’ll view anything below that as a pay cut, which he won’t accept. With a rising cap and ufa status, he will use that leverage to get every cent he can, definitely won’t accept the same or lower cap hit %.

I wouldn’t want him, I don’t think he’s a warrior in the playoffs- but imo the Leafs would be better off with a sign and if things aren’t working out well in the playoffs again- a trade. Leafs should NOT let him go for nothing unless he really doesn’t want to sign. All of a sudden in a rising cap, JT is affordable on a friendly hit. You have nylander Matthew’s Rielly JT signed with term and about 20 mil in cap space. Get at least 2 1sts from Marner trade and a body and flip the two firsts for deadline acquisitions to replace Marner previous cap hit and extend Knies. Same team pretty much with lots more depth. Would be a better playoff team

He’s a winger who can drive play which is rare and provides equal value as a centreman. I’d say 13 x 8 in Toronto. As a UFA he will easily get some to to go 14 x 7.

Is this really how a lot of Canadians view that tournament?
Absolutely not. It was a fun tournament and we’re prideful. That coupled with the current “climate” made it special. But not on the level of Stanley cup or Olympic gold to be sure.

IMO, Marner is a very good player it’s just that his appeal is only to a certain set of team with his presumed price tag. Cash strapped teams are going to be hesitant to pay any winger that kind of cash and uproot their roster to accommodate it. Finding a contender that can fit him will be very hard.

Just won a cup. Reality is that game was higher stakes and more “important” than a cup. Thr president of the US was calling. 10 million in the us watched. It was a massive game.

A cup was handed out in August. Olympic golds are handed out in February. Seems like a great month to be a clutch performer.

Why does he give up the extra year. That makes no sense to me.

If he wants 13….. he has to make up 2 million a year to break even. If he wants out. Why not get traded for an extension
President of the USA was calling Marner and team Canada? Marner I bet gives 2 rips about the USA president, or at least he shouldn't.

On any other team, 13m. On the leafs, I’d be begging him to waive his NMC. The cap structure of that team is broken and resigning him will continue the issues.

Was this supposed to be funny?

He is still better than EVERY player in Montreal.
Too bad he will never relish in the glory that is the conference finals as long as he plays for Toronto, as ridiculously stacked as the team has been.

The Leafs have at least 4 players that are better than anything Montreal has produced in decades, yet they underachieve every single season and are the league's running gag. Not sure that was the gotcha you thought it was.

His floor is 12 considering the worst teams in the league would be happy to give him that, maybe even 13-14 seeing as they'd have the money and the cap is going up.

From a Toronto perspective, it's 100% down to how he does in the playoffs. At some point you have to try something different if it's clearly not working like we see in Toronto.

All the 4 of the core are the same player, softer skill guys who struggle in the playoff. Clearly you need a mix because even though certain players are more built for playoff Hockey and all it entails, you need the skill guys to get you a good seeding, a good matchup and actually make those skill plays which the tougher players can't make.

Barkov and Tkachuk are a good highlight of that, both of them did nothing in the playoffs alone and neither of them were good enough to carry a team anywhere, until they were paired together. A perfect match, the skill scrappy heart and soul guy with the guy who has otherworldly skill and is amazing defensively.

In Toronto the 4 are too similar for it to work/be cohesive, this is probably their last shot
