Mitch has a better PPG than Matthews in the playoffs, and has led the Leafs in scoring 4 (going on 5) times during the RS. He didn't choke in the 4 Nations, and is a premier two-way playmaker.

He's deserving of something in the 11.750 to 13.250 range. Ottawa doesn't have the cap space, but if we magically rid ourselves of Amadio, Forsberg, and Perron - I'd offer 12.500 for max years.

Matthews is worth his contract. 3 Rockets, Hart, Ted Lindsay…. no one has scored more goals than him since he’s entered the NHL.

He is injured right now and having a down season because of it.

Marner is a huge reason why Matthews has as many goals as he does. To neglect Marner’s contributions is short sighted.

I’d offer Mitch 7x12 as a Flames fan although it may hinder our salary cap going forward. It be awesome to have a dynamic player of his caliber.

People will have lower figures, but I like Marner so I think the Leafs should pay him big time. They should give 1 million per year for every series the Leafs have won since he joined them. I'm not sure how much that is? Maybe 15 million or something???

Was this supposed to be funny?

He is still better than EVERY player in Montreal.

Just won a cup.

Really? When the hell did the Leafs win the Cup?

Reality is that game was higher stakes and more “important” than a cup.

Bollocks.

In the current climate it was important, but in hockey terms it wasn't as important as a Cup.

Bitchy Mitchy disappears in the playoffs when it matters and games become tough.

What we do know is the Leafs can’t afford to let him walk for the value of only clearing his cap.

Addition by subtraction.

I wonder if there could be a Marner for Rantanen deal? Marner would need to waive, of course.

I honestly don't care that our two best players play the same position if marner wanted to come to Philly I'd make the cap work. A guy that good going ufa is rare

The answer changes wildly depending on circumstance.

With the way the cap is going up, a team could give a star like Marner or Rantanen max, which would be foolish, but after only 2 seasons, a 19.1M contract will deflate to the equivalent of a player signing a 16.2M contract this past offseason.

Now consider that is max, which neither will get - but it shows why they both could get something in the 14M-16M range and it wouldn't be that crazy because within 2 seasons that will be very manageable for a superstar.

The big consideration for teams will be how it effects their salary structure but there will be a team that doesn't have a big star or has all their stars locked down for 3+ years that could go for it.

give him 15.9 mil per for 8 years
Hughes is not going to do that, dude. Unless theres a big trade

What do you mean "now"? Nothing has changed from the tournament.
If you're not going to change your opinion of a player after every couple of games, then you're going to be left behind in this HF world, my dear friend

It’s 100% up to Marner. He has all the leverage.
With ted rogers taking over who knows
He likes stars
He was in on ohtani and apparently offered vladdy jr market value
My guess if hr doesnt see marner as being fair ,he may wait and throw 20 million at mcdavid

I think if the leafs offerrd 12-13 in between hed be signed by now
Untill he gets an ultimatum we ll never know

I wouldn't be surprised if they've already come to an agreement. Signing him to a huge contract after last season would've caused a huge backlash against him and the management, so wait until people have cooled down, let him show people he's very good and then sign a deal.
