This was a big part of Price's game, he's freakin amazing at handling and clearing the puck behind the net

Am I the only one here who thinks getting goalies to play the puck more would have terrible consequences? The more they leave the net to play the puck the higher the risk of goalies getting destroyed by forwards in races to the puck.

It just makes me think of the time lucic destroyed miller when miller tried to beat him in a foot race.

Yes, in fact lets reverse it and they can't play it inside the trapezoid now, only outside of it. Ridiculous the rule was ever made to penalize one player who played the game too well. That's like making the nets smaller because Ovechkin scores too many goals compared to the rest of the league. Dumb.

Should've been laughed at the moment it was thought of.

The thing about allowing goalies to play the puck anywhere is that goalies like Turco and Brodeur acted as a third d-man but could not even be touched let alone checked by forecheckers.

Perhaps if you want goaltenders to be able to enter the play they should be given the same rights as the skaters.

That said I'm largely indifferent about the trapezoid...but if it is removed offence will be decreased further.

That would be... interesting, to say the least.

I think that's a fair compromise, really. Goalies can play the puck, but if they skate outside the trapezoid, they are fair game. It deters them, but doesn't prevent it.

You guys all complain that scoring is too low, but you want the trapezoid gone? Contradiction right there. Broduer hasn't been the best puck handling goalie in NHL for awhile now either, the rule hasn't been catered to just him since like 2008...

The thing with trapezoid is that i'm struggling to explain it and justify its existence to people who are trying to get into hockey.

Yea, most people that dont really follow hockey are confused by it. I am as well, I have no clue why it was brought in. One of the most asinine moves the sport could have made.

The trap is what ruined it. Barrasso and Hextall did not play behind the trap and the trap was not common back then. In this day and age until they figure out how to end trapping, the rule needs to stay otherwise it will lead to waaay too much defensive hockey.

It was a dumb rule in the first place. I'm surprised it was even approved, and even more surprised that it's lasted as long as it has.

What the hell are you talking about. The reason the rule came in was because Brodeur was playing behind a wall in the neutral zone hooking and clogging the ice. This made it easier for him to quickly grab the puck and get it right back out. Its literally like 6 players on the ice.

Price would have a heyday and the rule would be re-instated. He's like a third d-man with the trapezoid. Another guy that likes to handle the puck a lot (not as well as Price) is Stalock. D-men who haven't played a lot with him sometimes get caught off guard and miscommunications have happened because of Stalock handling the puck.
