They'd probably want to see what Couts looks like before the summer.
Not that it would make a major difference, but better he gets re-injured in April and they have LTIR money, or he's healthy and they know he'll play next year and have a sense of what level. Last thing this team needs is another "October surprise."
Couts can be a key component of a rebuild if he's close to 100%, he's the kind of veteran you want around to mentor the young players, and would take the pressure off Frost, Cates and Gauthier (and if they draft a center) to be a 1C while they develop.
