Dubas doesn't believe in toughness. Otherwise he would have addressed it (other than Muzzin) in the last four years. His only concern is building a strong regular season team based around stars they can market.
We're you in a coma the last few years? Simmonds, Clifford, Ritchie, ZAR, Hunt, Benn. Is that not addressing team toughness?

Edit- forgot BOGO and Boosh

It would be nice to have a Boosh or BOgo type of Defenseman just for the extra pop. But people also dont recognize that Gio, Sandin and Lilly are pretty nasty too.

Funny we had those guys and were eliminated in the 1st round.

Call me out in April, but I like the makeup of our D now maybe more then at any point in the post 2005 lockout era.

Matty smart not to get goaded into a fight .. why take your best guy off ice for 5 minutes .. Bunting and Benn handled it perfectly
Nobody wants him to fight, that's an unnecessary injury risk...but a nicely placed cross check to the chest/arm area? Yes please
As long as he doesn't go over the line and tries to do dental work like he did for Dahlin.

I think Matthews should trade a couple of mins in the box for some respect around the league.

5/6 should not be in a contender's everyday lineup.

Hypothetically, if you're a low scoring team, is acquiring Petan or Malgin addressing a team skill problem?

Look what Matthews did when he kept getting multiple cross-checks from Nick Cousins and what Michael Bunting did after that.

The low key trip and embarassment last night felt perfect to me

That is what toughness really is though. A lot of the names that get thrown around for added toughness are either not good enough to be in our lineup, or they are maybe decent 4th liners.

The top 9 guys are either unavailable and extremely rare or do not have the skating to keep up with our system.

Zach Hyman is a tough player in today's day and age. Ryan Reaves toughness is simply not important anymore, unless you can also play like Tom Wilson at the same time.

I do feel like Detroits Bertuzzi would fit in nicely and the ask is only a 2nd and prospect apparently.

Bertuzzi is not really a "tough" player though. He is a pest.

And I feel like having him and Bunting on the same team will really make the refs hate us that much more.

Entirely depends on how you define the term.

If there’s a scarcity problem then mgmt’s day 1 mantra of “just acquire it through trade/FA” is flawed. Which happens to be the case.

Mentally the team shook off a couple bad goals, kept their eyes on the prize and delivered the win at the end of the night.

Seems like the attitude we should want to see from the team, no? Would have been much more concerning if they had thrown in the towel after the 1st period

With a lot of help from the refs.
Yes, the Leafs might have had 7 power plays and the Panthers only got 3 of them.

However, after last year seeing the phantom high sticking penalties called on the Leafs in Game 6 of the 3rd period, along with the Justin Holl penalty in Game 7, and some other missed calls that night. I'm not going to be upset if the Leafs are given a lot more chances on the power play.

Maybe some people would call this smart by Gudas the way he turtled and drew a penalty on Aston-Reese.

However, if a Leafs player ever did that what are the chances they would get a power play or would the media call them out for not fighting?

I would’ve liked to see Hunt be more physical but I thought we showed enough toughness
Since he scored the Leafs 1st goal I think that's more important than whatever toughness he didn't use.

Yes, their players should play physical when given the chance. However, in the end goal scoring is what wins the games, instead of winning the hit totals.

Lucic with retention for a cheap prospect wouldn't be bad. No way Sutter let's him go though. Good luck Bruins trying to push Luch and Simmer around. The team would play 3" taller and Matthew's loves these kind of players. Tom Wilson wouldn't take liberties either.

It really does not work that way but I get your point and idear .. as soon as he cross checks back with meaningful intent then that guy will drip da gloves and start throwing to get Matty off da ice .. that is why you saw Benn in area in case that occurred .. hockey is after all a violent game .. also why we always need a Benn type on ice because Bettman/Jacobs will not properly police us

Weird timing for this thread.
I thought Bunting and ZAR showed great team toughness tonight. Team didn't back down.
In fact intermission commented how Leafs showed well in this regard.
I sorta thought they stood up for each other, too.

They don’t have to bloody anyone’s face, just answer the bell when required.
