When I was playing youth football two brothers on my team had recently moved from Rhode Island. They made me feel ashamed of the pride I felt in my dad because they told everyone their father was a God.

Later found out he worked security at the airport.

Imagine the reaction their dad got when he casually and confidently told people he was a God.

Since it is a hockey board I can't possibly let this conversation about accents continue...

without bringing up that all my family is from Minnesota and yes some of them talk like the people from the movie Fargo -- the accents in that movies are not even a slight exaggeration. Fortunately for me I didn't develop that accent, and despite growing up outside of Boston I didn't develop a New Englander accent either. I'm lucky to be normal, but with a hint of wannabe Russian accent at times since attempting to learn how to speak that god forsaken language. Can't help it :dunno:

Just a quick little bit of gold I picked up while doing research for the History board.

Back in '81, Brad Marsh fell out of favor in Calgary and got traded. Having been booed quite a bit by the home crowd, he made some pretty blunt comments about their fanbase ("brutal fans", "think they know more than fans in other arenas but they really don't") on the way out the door. He was asked how he thought the fans would respond next time he came to Calgary as a visiting player, after reading these comments.

I'm paraphrasing slightly, but his response amounted to: at worst, they might boo me like I was playing for the home team

I talk with a heavy southern drawl. Hey, it is what it is, I can't help it.

When traveling, I have people laugh at the way I talk. I always tell them I'm from the South, of France.
Years ago I went to a training deal in DC. A group of us were sitting in the hotel bar one night and a stereotypical Long Island Italian guy with the gold chains told me "Youse guys sure talks funny". I reckon.

When I first moved down here, there were some situations where I truly had trouble understanding what was being said. For instance, I was in Home Depot and some lady asked me if I knew where the "Floss Water" were kept. Rather than state I have no clue what she was saying, I simply said no and motioned to a Home Depot employee at the end of the aisle. Curious though, I followed her to find out what she was buying and found out she was buying a Fly Swatter.

Where I grew up, there was a strong "Canadian" style accent. Never thought anything of it. After moving away many years ago, I now have trouble understanding everything and when I go back to visit, I have times where I have to think about what someone just said.
5th grade in the early 60s before there was mass in-migration, a kid joined in the middle of the year. From New Yawk (Staten friggin Island no less) with a heavy accent. Meanwhile our teacher was a southern belle with a drawl a mile long. We could kinda follow him but he had a hell of a time with the teacher. Lot of laughs. And he freaked when she brought in a TV for the ACC tourney.
