My notes on today's scrimmage:

Best forward on whites: Reway. Man-boy has serious chops. Not fast in terms of flat out speed--he has a very short stride. But is he quick. And tricky. Wow.

Best forward on reds: Thomas. Very smart player. Ryder-like in his ability to find the seams and has a very quick shot. But faster than Ryder...no, much faster. Odds on favorite fill in if Gionta is not available to start the season.

Collberg was invisible until the third when he started to become more involved. Quiet night for Hudon. Bournival is a very good skater but was not really that threatening. McCarron is obviously huge and equally obviously not ready. He's a project. Looking forward to following him in the OHL. Tarnasky seems to know how to play his game--goes to the net. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets a look later in the season. Fournier is a big guy and likes to be involved. We'll see if he can keep up to the pace in the AHL. Gregoire and other new guys...not much to say.

As for the vets, Pacioretti looks like his champing at the bit. Very physical. Showed no signs of injury at all. Gonna have a good season. Plekanec looks ready. As usual.

===============================

On D, Murray is huge...and quietly competent. Diaz looked very agile. Nygren got caught up ice in the first--bonehead play. Settled down though. Looks much bigger on the ice than Diaz and plays accordingly. Tinordi was very solid. Smooth. Calm. Ditto for Pateryn who laid a very big hip check on Blunden (if my memory serves me well). Lashoff distinguished himself by taking an unnecessary penalty and making a couple of bad defensive choices. May not be around for long.

Gorges looked very good. Took the puck away from some of the flashy young guys. No fuss no musss. PK was clearly pacing himself, but when he chose to open up the machine you could see who the best player on the ice really was.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now for the goaltending. Price was good. Only gave up one goal but still spent more time on his knees than I would have liked. Budaj let in a couple including a real softy from Fournier. Fucale looked very professional both in the warmup and the scrimmage despite getting run over repeatedly by Paccioretti.

Goalie of the game: Tokarski. Made some excellent, acrobatic saves. Very promising.

Not true ... He was all over on the forecheck and made some nice plays

Frankly, I did not really notice Hudon all that much. It may be that I was focusing on other players. It's hard to keep track when everyone on the ice plays for your team.

And with so many little guys zooming around (Gallagher, Desharnais, St-Pierre, Reway, Hudon and more), forwards like Fournier and McCarron are easier to flag. That said, I had no trouble spotting Reway. What a shifty little devil!

And Thomas--who seems to get less attention than Hudon or Collberg on these boards but who is far more likely to start the season with the big club--fit in very well on the Plekanec line. Really seemed to belong. If Bourque can implicate himself as much as he is capable and not disappear for lengthy periods of time (he is also capable of this), this line may surprise.

Just saw highlights.. I don't know how the rest of his game is, defensively etc, but Reway's backhand was ridiculous... Definitely an interesting pick for the fourth round of this year

Just finished watching the game, that Reway line was fun to watch. Also, the Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher line looked great.

Both teams were invisible.:sarcasm:

My standout: Reway. The guy has balls the size of Jupiter, pulling backyard rink shinny moves in a pro camp game...

Just watched the game, some Dmen that stood out- Pateryn, Dietz and Tinordi. The vets were the vets.
Fucale and Tokarski played well. Reway reminds me of Patrick Kane, very tricky and crafty. The Eller line was good.
Bournival did nothing special but he has some impressive wheels. Leblanc looked solid but did not stand out. Thomas played solid hockey and made a great pass to Pleks on his goal. Collberg looked pretty good considering he has not practiced or skated much lately.
Big Mac has game, he was actually pretty good.
Habs have some promising young players.

Even though it's normally a bad idea during an actual game, there's always this sense of anticipation and excitement when PK charges up for a solo rush. I think normally the opposition would be pretty confident guarding against a rush like that, but with PK he could cut right through you even though he's a Dman.

I'm watching now. So glad they put it up!! :handclap:

I'm telling you, Reway has Petrov written all over him. :)

Which is not a bad thing, as long as he doesn't end up tying the team for scoring lead like Oleg did that god-forsaken year... that would mean we have a pretty bad team.

But I say, as a third liner, if your top 6 is pretty big... Third liner, 2nd PP wave... moves up to second with injuries, shootout threat...

You could do a lot worse than a new Oleg Petrov.

I totally agree with you. Oleg Petrov was a good player but was far from being able to carry a team.

As far as prospects and the younger core of forwards in the Habs organization, they have some bigger players such as Pacioretty, Eller and Galchenyuk who they will be able to rely on for the next decade baring injuries and also have smaller but talented players such as Gallagher and Desharnais. So if the future is bright for Reway and he turns out to be a gem and future Petrov like player, it really is only a good thing.

McCarron and Collberg seem to be very promising picks so far but if for some reason one or both don't pan out and Reway does, it will be a steal at 4th round to help the Habs depth. BTW I haven't given up on Leblanc. He had a bad season in Hamilton but we'll see how this season goes before calling him a bust.

Again Petrov was never a very physical player. But he was shifty, had great hands and could contribute offensively despite his small size. If Petrov is Reways potential, it would be great to have him on a checking line, play some minutes on the top 2 lines when there is a player struggling or injury and get some second unit PP time as you mentioned. BTW in Petrov's days there was no shoot-out. Reway might just have something more to offer than Petrov in today's NHL.

But even if he's one of the top scorers in preseason I expect Reway to play this season in Gatineau and maybe even a full season in Hamilton. It will be a better guide to see where his talent can take him.

The current team already has an abundance of smaller players, he's still very physically immature and needs to work on the defensive side of his game (which is apparently very green to him). Reway will be much more physically able to accept the wear and tear of the NHL in 2 years when he gets more mature and it will give the Habs time to fit him into the lineup if they believe he's capable of contributing at the NHL level and play an 82 game season against men. That's somewhat what they did with Gallagher and so far he been holding his own.

But I'm hoping he continues to improve and turns out to be a steal. Everyone loves surprises!

My two cents:

-BLUNDEN: career AHLer.
-BOURNIVAL: needs 2-3 more years. 4th line center.
-BOURQUE: Looks good. MT will continue to push him.
-BRIÈRE: Lost a step. Isn't competitive as he used to be.
-COLLBERG: Physically weak, needs 2-3 more years.
-DESHARNAIS: Looks faster like his old self.
-DUMONT: Honest truth...career AHLer or 4th liner.
-ELLER: Doesn't look 100% yet. Needs a few games to regain confidence.
-FOURNIER: Skating is a big issue. Career AHLer.
-GALCHENYUK: Most talented player on ice, will only get better.
-GALLAGHER: Hasn't lost a step, plays with heart like last year.
-GIONTA: N/A
-HUDON: Needs more time. Doesn't know how to use his teammates yet.
-LEBLANC: Working hard, tried to do too much. Won't be surprise if he's cut.
-McCARRON: Big Mac looks huge, skating, size, grit, could be mistaken for Lucic.
-MOEN: Plays like he doesn't care.
-PACIORETTY: Driving and crashing to the net. Could he be a powerforward?
-PLEKANEC: Love him or hate him, I love his girly reaction to miss scoring chance.
-PRUST: Looks like a kid having fun. Gotta love this guy.
-REWAY: Stood out but physically not there yet. Needs 2-3 years.
-ST-PIERRE: Career AHLer.
-TARNASKY: Career AHLer.
-THOMAS: Will make the team playing in Gionta's spot for now.
-WHITE: Love his character. He and Prust are good for the team's chemistry.

-BEAULIEU: N/A
-BOUILLON: Breaking down like an old car.
-DIAZ: Looks okay, isn't confident in defensive zone.
-DIETZ: 2 years away from making the team.
-DREWISKE: Better suited for AHL.
-GORGES: Looking out for little brother PK.
-LASHOFF: Career AHLer.
-MARKOV: Looks slower than last season.
-MURRAY: Slower than I thought.
-NYGREN: Smart defender. Hope Habs give him a chance.
-PATERYN: Could be a 6th defenseman in 2 years.
-SUBBAN: Love PK but you gotta stop taking the puck right up our net.
-TINORDI: Needs more time, 1 more year at least.

-BUDAJ: bad goal, needs confidence.
-PRICE: Our franchise.
-FUCALE: Cam Ward in the making. At least 2 years away.
-TOKARSKI: Career AHLer or callup.
