Over the weekend I was trying to think about who in the NHL the 2017 to 2024 Senators compare to. Outside of Buffalo and Detroit I can't think of anyone. At least Detroit has won Stanley Cups in my lifetime. The most generous thing I can think of is comparing them to the NFL's Chicago Bears or Carolina Panthers. Can anyone think of anything else?

Bears are showing signs of life finally. They are close to being decent they just happen to play in the best division in football.

We're not quite as bad as the Panthers.

If anything we're the Jets. Every offseason we are going to be a playoff team, people are picking us to win the division and so on. Then the puck drops and the year basically plays out the same as the last one.

Don't think there was that much humanly possible to do. This team was horribly owned, managed and coached for years. The support, depth and leadership/veteran help has been really subpar too and it doesn't look like it's much better this season.

The only thing we have learned is that Chabot is not superhuman and can't do it all by himself? It's a story we have read so many times before when players like Duchene, Zibanejad, Stone, Gustavsson, Chychrun etc become much better elsewhere

It would have been such a stupid idea to re-sign/claim Brannstrom!

Play Brannstrom on RD, play him on LD when a LHD is injured. Was the perfect band-aid for this team.
You are pretty much saying Chabot plays to the level of his teammates and shouldn't count on him to be our best player let alone our best D.

No I am not saying "he plays to the level of his teammates" but at the same time, like everybody, he needs better linemates to be better. That's why he has played his best hockey when paired with DeMelo, Zub and now Jensen. That's all we could provide him during all this time.

Every player has his limits to what they can do. This is not basketball. Even McDavid can't win a Cup by himself. Even if he gets the help from Draisaitl and Bouchard.

Sanderson is supposed to be our best D.

No but McDavid can be awesome by himself. You are either driving the bus or you are a passenger. In 8 seasons he's only been a passenger. Sanderson is already the driver. If his linemates suck then he sucks is what you are saying.

If he’s not playing better than Zub and Jensen why is he making twice as much ?

They are fair questions. I just think it comes to retool vs rebuild.

If the team did a fire sale, they’d probably retain on Chabot to get a good deal. In a retool, I suspect they will focus on trading players that are in demand so they can restructure the team quickly and leave anyone else to remain “competitive” and insulate the young guys.

I have no idea what they’re thinking but personally I don’t envision the Sens doing a full rebuild or purposely trying to be bad. I don’t think the fanbase has an appetite for a losing team. I see them trying to quickly fix the team and asking for patience in the form of a year or two while they make the changes they want to make.

Maybe we’ll go on a ten game winning streak and none of this will happen. Doubtful but lots of ways this can go still.
The players that are in demand would be our better players that don’t have albatross type contracts. So, maybe what we get back from trading one of those players puts us into a net zero gain? You got to give to get.

I guess the idea or hope is that we make one trade and the net results is that we much better off in the end. It sounds good, and hopefully that will happen if that’s what it boils down to. I get the idea of a quick or easy fix, but things don’t always work out that way. Maybe in certain situations it does. I wonder what percentage of time that happens I suppose (I have no data).

I don’t know what Staois has planned either. It would be nice to know.

I’m generally against making changes for the sake of change.

I just see no way out of it if we suck again this year. It might not work out but it’s still inevitably all you can really do, the time to run it back is basically over.

Hopefully they can string some wins together here and we can avoid it altogether.

Lots of questions I suppose. Do they make a move sooner versus later? Later could be this summer especially if we have another non-playoff season. Staois has to define what the problem is and how big it is. Staois seems like a methodical guy. If you add it all up, I have no idea what will happen. Glad I’m not Staois.

Wasn't going to go to another game this year unless they turn it around... but Pizza Line reunion ceremony on Dec. 5, so I can't miss that.

I think it's just a case of waiting to see where we're at at the deadline. If we're in the playoff hunt, stay mostly put. If we're not, sell off some assets (Giroux at a minimum, and maybe some piece of the core) and retool.

Ultimately we don't have much room to maneuver. Our prospect farm is depleted, we don't have a plethora of picks, we are close to the cap. We haven't been to the playoffs for too many years, and the fans are impatient.

The ideal scenario given the state of the team would be to make the playoffs this year and next, to buy some goodwill from the fans. Then re-tool/re-build around Stu, Sanderson, Yak, and cheaper younger non-core assets such as Pinto, Greig, Ostapchuk.
