Man, for a guy who consistently had a completion rating higher than 60% and a QB rating of 90 - including an outlier season of 110 where he definitely dragged a terrible team to a .500 record - Culpepper sure is taking some flak here. There have been a few guys who have had better single seasons than him (George, Cunningham, Favre), but for total career he's probably in the top 3 QBs the Vikings have ever had. Maybe top 4 at worst.
The problem with Culpepper, who was a unique player, with a great arm, size, and athleticism, is that he was never the same after his serious knee injury. The guy relied on his gifts to gain yards, rather than escape pressure, which i think is a mistake for any QB. Favre, Rodgers, Tarkenton... those guys used their feet and evasiveness to give their receivers more time to get open, rather than to make like running backs. As a result, they had long careers.
Culpepper - 105 gp
Tarkenton - 246 gp
Favre - 302 gp
Rodgers - 248 gp, and counting.
Starr- 196 gp
I loved Warren Moon's game, but his best years were in Houston and the CFL. He didn't play for MN till he was 38 yo. Cunningham was also old'ish when he played for MN. Statistically, Cousins is the best of the MN bunch besides Fran, but it's really hard to compare stats over different eras. I never had confidence in him in the clutch.
I am happy that MN is rolling the dice with a new, young QB. I know we have whiffed with Teddy, Ponder, and countless others, but getting a retread, or an over the hill guy like Rodgers/Cunningham/Moon is short sighted. Vikings have to keep swinging till they hit on a guy.
