Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

Noah Dobson supporting Shaefer? Yeesh, the Isles are head down the wrong road on that one.

Dobson needs to learn to support himself vs. being a bunch of buzzwords about himself.

$2.5 is the price for a "team player"
There’s no reports of Tony D being an issue with the Isles.

I’m more than fine with reallocating Dobson’s soon to be contract cap hit/term for:
- different assets
- different use of cap space
- cover with Tony D
- accept the risk of Tony Ds defensive shortcomings due to his price.

There’s tradeoffs in moving Dobson, but so far other than ‘market price’ there’s nothing showing Dobson is worth that price. He barely had an impact on the lowly World Championships…

You can trade Dobson now because he is unsigned, making him a value....
Sign him to a multi-year 10+ mil deal and see how many teams lose interest...
If it’s common knowledge that Dobson is asking for $11M/yr, he already tanked his trade value. Who else do you think will pay him that much? Any trade Darche makes now for Dobson will come up short of fair value.

The point is a team will "Hope" to get him to sign for a reasonable amount.
If we sign him for anything close to that, it tanks his value.
He is not worth that $

i can’t see another team “hope” or “wish” to get him with that ask already out there.

The cap is going up 25%. 10.6M will be the equivalent cap % of 8.5M.

Does he compare to Sergachev/Sanderson/Hamilton? I'd say so. NYI put themselves in this position by not signing Dobson to a longer deal earlier.

I don't think his value is as tanked as you all might think. It's a huge risk for him to go ahead and play for a year under arbitration to reach UFA.

I don't think this is some dire situation.

Based on what I saw this season, I tend to agree with this.
But I don't follow the Isles as closely as you guys do.
I hope the 23-24 season wasn't an outlier.

Dobson being comparable to Hamilton would be a good reason to trade him for whatever they can get. ;)
When Hamilton got traded for a first and 2 seconds his career high was like 42 points. Wasn’t until his fourth team did he get 70. Just food for thought in terms of trade comparison, not that that was what you were talking about

Yes, that's true. If Darche and the scouting staff see a future bad contract in Dobson, a la Hamilton, I would hope that they move him. If they see a true #1 RHD, then sign him for under $10M.

100%...
Let some other sucker team pay him that.
I will take the value back in a trade....
Give me Robertson or a High Pick in the Draft, either this year or Next....

That's fine. I'm not married to keeping Dobson. If he wants much more than 9M and a great deal comes along for him you should probably take it.

That said...For all the people who don't want to rebuild, I'm curious to see them justify how this bottom 10 defensive corps with Dobson will be Cup contender worthy without him and Schaefer not coming for years. I guess we're going to sign Ekblad and then bend space and time to make Isaiah George the next Ryan McDonagh or something.

I think this is why it is important to not have such a strict mindset with no flexibility. It is how you get this current team that Lou built. I have been pretty outspoken that they can contend after another year if they play their cards right.

That being said, if Dobson wants an insane deal it is smarter to take two steps back so when this team is ready to contend they don't have to figure out a way to get rid of his contract.

guess the thing with Dobson is, you have no secure idea what player he will be in two years.....he can be who we see today (last year) or he cans still be that stud of a D-man.....while i think the former i take comfort in knowing i am not the guy who has to make that decision...nor envy him.

Well happy to be flexibile, but you also need a plan.

Maybe most importantly...You have to be honest about where you team is in relation to Cup contention. Lou was either no honest and/or just delusional about how talented this team was and thus he just kept going for it with zero shot of this Isles reaching it.

Now this is Lou's flawed roster that needs an injection of talent to become a playoff team - A several levels of talent injection to become a Cup contender. And if we're being honest that latter process will probably take years. Schaefer is hopefully a great start in that journey, but going to take him 3-4 years from now to hopefully be NHL acclimated and reaching his potential.

All that said many out there think this team is a tweak or two away from being in the mix for a Cup. Many of those same people believe just making the playoffs anything can happen, and also believe that you should never "rebuild" under any circumstances.

That's all cool, but for those out there ok trading Dobson from a team that cannot make the playoffs with him, you are probably bringing this team closer to a rebuild in the process.
