Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

Utah moving to #4 actually might be looking more for now then getting an 18 year old

I could see something like Dobson and Denny Nelson for 4 and 2026 2nd
Sharks fan trying to get a sense of Misa vs Schaefer on your board but also a Utah season ticket holder. Utah does not need defense so I doubt they'd be interested in Dobson. We need impact forwards and ideally a 2C that is young and ready to win now. Don't know anything about Nelson but he's big which we also need. Just seems unlikely they make this trade with Dobson being the center piece after acquiring Sergachev and Marino.

I think that we take Schaefer unless SJ or Chicago absolutely blow us out of the water. A new GM coming in and moving the #1 feels unlikely. Hasn't happened for over 20 years

Agree. As fun as it is to debate organizational need, I dont see how you dont just draft BPA and that would be Schaefer unless something changes between now and the draft that has Misa/Schaefer a ? in terms of who is BPA. Really hoping you guys take Misa but happy to get one of the two as a Sharks fan.

Frondell makes a ton of sense for Utah. We need size and centers more than anything. I'd also be interested in Martone but I think he goes to Chicago. Hagens seems like a pass given we are already a small team

I would put Nelson in the middle 6 category. I don't see him being a big point producer but basically a guy who might get you 40-50 points and play a good 2 way game. Probably not the type you want if looking for high offensive output, but a solid center to fill out the roster. Of coarse no guarantee he reaches that level. well worth more then that 2nd rounder to make up a bit of the difference basically.

But yeah if you comfortable with your defense then I can see why you might pass to take a chance on a higher output center which is why I would be willing to try take a chance on Hagens by trading a more proven player(albiet one who will get a big payday this summer)

Always Leary to trade a proven young right handed 70 point d man that albeit is soft and kinda regressed for magic beans.
He’s “proven” if he’s hit 70 a few times. He’s done it once. He basically had one breakout year and yes, has regressed from that. Potential to get back, but as of right now he’s a tweeter 2/3 with flaws in his game.

If Dobson gets offer sheeted at 9.5 do we match?

Which draft are those picks?
Starts the following year, so in this case 2026, and you have to have all of YOUR OWN picks to make it work. In some cases I believe some teams have traded their own pick but gotten back another team's, has to be their own, and IIRC St. Louis had to trade back for their own pick to be able to do offer sheets last year.

Is Dobson another Dougie Hamilton? If so, move him. As soon as the Devs signed Hamilton, I knew that was a really bad move that would get in the way of the dynasty that was being predicted for them.

if we are talking 1st rounders in 2026 and 2027 plus a 2nd and 3rd. Yeah, sorry I'm letting him go.

In think it depends on the team offering. Is it the Stars? Those picks are likely mid 20’s. Is it the Sharks? Those picks I would absolutely take.

I’m fine with moving Dobson but I would prefer a young player that has shown a lot of potential and a 2026 first.

you are right, not taking a bottom half team...and yes, wish Sharks would give us Ekland or McTavish from the Ducks.

This is one of those things where it's no so much about value, but flexibility. A team that deals consecutive firsts along is really hamstringing their near term future - they won't necessarily know what they might need. I think an offer sheet at that level is extremely unlikely. A team that motivated would imo absolutely be more interested in making a trade for Dobson's rights. In the very unlikely hypothetical, I'll take the picks. But I think a team that would do that would already have made a significant offer that would be worth considering.

There will be rumbles about deals right before/at the draft, most likely. And Dobson's value to the Islanders *and* his incentive for signing an offer sheet will decrease as his arbitration date approaches. Dobson is the reason NYI need to fill the GM spot ASAP, because if NYI don't want to meet his demands, the draft is the best time to make a deal. After July 1, salary cap room goes down, and Dobson's leverage goes up.

can anyone refresh my memory .

is there a formula by which the aav on an offer sheet is calculated ?

for some reason my belief is if someone goes 9.5 x 7 years it has to be calculated as 9.5 x 7 divided by 5 to get the aav for offer sheet compensation purposes . Am I out to lunch on this assumption
