Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

Dobson should probably be traded.

If we go full rebuild/mostly rebuild then he’s our highest value asset to trade to a team like MTL or SJ that are flush with picks/prospects.

If we try and compete next year and keep Roy around, I think it’s been pretty clear that Dobson hasn’t been at his best in Roy’s system. You look look for a trade for a center - maybe it’s Petterson, maybe it’s Rossi.

If we bring in a new coach with the new GM and the plan is to compete, I can see them keeping him around. Can a new coach get him to the next level? It’s possible, if not probable. Also gotta think a right side of Deangelo/pulock/Mayfield might not be the most attractive thing to a perspective new coach.

We played Carolina in back to back playoffs. Carolina have shown they can make very good players look mediocre. Dobson’s lack of production in the last two playoff years shouldn’t be held against him.
That $9M Dougie Hamilton looked very Dobson-like. Buckle up for the ride.

I am holding it against him because he’s supposed to produce. Arguably a top five impact player on the team, he needs to be held accountable.

When you go asking for an 8 year deal making #1 defenseman money we have to hold him accountable. The fact of the matter is he has not shown one single time he is able to produce come playoff time, he still has not shown the ability to run a successful PP, and he has MANY question marks defensively.

Habs fan coming in peace.

Congrats on winning the draft lottery. If you go the Schaefer route and draft him would it make Dobson more available?

You could quick start the rebuild and Montreal has a boat load of prospects and picks to trade. They have #16 and #17 overall this year. Plus two 2nd round picks and three 3rd round picks.

What would a trade package look like from the Habs?

Side note is that Horvat or Barzal would be a great addition too.

Any chance of moving Dobson and one of next year's first rounders to get back into the Top 5 of this year's draft to pick Hagens (assuming they don't draft him 1OA, which I hope they don't)?

I know next year's draft is supposed to be "special", but the idea of getting Schafer AND Hagens this year is a great opportunity for the organization.

Utah moving to #4 actually might be looking more for now then getting an 18 year old

I could see something like Dobson and Denny Nelson for 4 and 2026 2nd

Always Leary to trade a proven young right handed 70 point d man that albeit is soft and kinda regressed for magic beans.

For me it really just comes down to salary demands. Should the Isles be paying him the ~9 million/year that he is seemingly looking for? If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't necessarily be entertaining the idea of moving him.

How do we use the cap space if so? Isles have options. Lgi. Already season ticket reps blowing up my phone. One day I'll tell him I live in the sunshine state.

I should probably get t out of my head we will pony up the 14M to sing Marner. lol

I guess Islander could try find a team looking to dump a upcoming UFA(in 2026) using their 2 picks next year under the assumption they could sign that player to a long term deal.

We're use the cap space next year and buy mcdavid. So we tank this year get that McKenna kid. Thanks uncle Gary again, then collect all this cap space and buy mcdavid. Fastest rebuild ever. Should I post this on the main board?

UT and Chicago are entering that phase where they need to acquire a proven player to advance the cause and show the fans they are doing that. SJ less so since they’ve set the expectations differently.

I’m not a big fan of paying Dobson, but would rather keep him to a certain extent. I would much rather dish off Barzal to UT or Chicago for their pick. If the Isles take Hagens, the Fan Club will shift the koolaid from Barzal to the hometown kid. Next season can be billed as a transitional year.

Use Barzal’s cap hit for a better fit.

Right?? Is it not the case he just had a bad year?

I too am wary of trading Dobson so soon.

That's the 9 million dollar/year question. If you sign him, and it proves to be just a down year, then you have a great offensive-minded/puck moving defenseman locked up long-term. But if what he did last year is the new norm, it's another albatross contract.

To compound matters, he's one year away from UFA status, so if they elect to hold onto him, it has to be on a long-term deal or they run the risk of him bolting to another team and losing him for nothing.

Isles will be gambling no matter what they decide to do with him.

If we trade signed Dobson for 2026 picks, that opens up our ability to sign 2025 RFA's:

Peterka
Rossi
McTavish
Voronkov
Villardi
Foerster
Quinn

$4,580,918 - $6,871,374 1st/3rd
$2,290,458 - $4,580,917 2nd

Dobson’s poor defensive play goes beyond last year, same with his crap defensive play in big games.

There’s too much emphasis on his 70 point season because it’s very easy to look at. He’s more of a 50 point collector with average defense ability. I say collector bc for a 70 point d-man he sure as heck hasn’t helped the power play.

True. And for the money he'll command, is 70 points per season enough production to justify the payday while having to shelter him late when trying to close out close games (especially in the playoffs).

Glad I'm hanging out in my home office with my feet up patrolling this message board not having to make the decision on what to do with Dobson. Not my problemo. Biggest issue I have today is making sure the crock pot turns to warm at 2pm. Maybe make a few sales calls in between LGI
