Speculation: Noah Dobson Fires Agent; Heads to Judd Moldaver at Wasserman

Dobson has great upside. Could definitely be a 1st pairing defenseman capable of being a PPG defenseman and PP specialist.

The question is if he'll reach that potential as he's had a very bad season. He's going to want to be paid for his upside when he hasn't proved he can be at that level consistently. And with him being a UFA in 2028 you can't give him a bridge deal as you want to buy as many of his UFA years as possible.

Meanwhile Lou is probably about to resign 33 year old Brock Nelson and 34 year old Kyle Palmieri. Here he should be focusing on drafting/acquiring young top talent, and yet he cannot help making the Islanders old and more average year after year.

If Dobson winds up getting traded I just hope Lou is "waived" by the Islanders first. That way at least a new GM was the person that traded Dobson, because Lou cannot be trusted to do anything right now.

Lou’s gonna get you a pair of 2nds and you’re going to like it.

Uhh, so much. Why would they want Nelson? He's a pending UFA.

Barsky, how would we feel about something around Dobson and Tkachuk?
Not Brady, sorry, Norris is the only one I'm peddling and that is rumoured to be available. For Dobber I'd let Yakemchuk go in a package though, top tier prospect. Norris + Yak +?

this kind of reminds me of the dougie hamilton story. big talented offensive dman and an old school run team seems pretty ambivalent about him. maybe they think he reads too many books when he should be watching pronger game tapes.

Definitely don’t wanna trade Dobson, but if they do, the off-season is the most logical time to do it. No reason to rush when he’s an RFA.
The Islanders went on that great run without Dobson and the 3 D pickups they got are playing well. They are within reach of a playoff spot. Lou might want to bring in a top line player now to make that push.

Playing on such an offensively deficient team could cost him tens of millions of dollars in his prime years if he stays on the Islanders.

I also agree that Dobson will not have good numbers on this NYI team…they can’t score consistently…

Right? He's 11th in the league in D scoring the last three years but put him on a top 10 offensive team and he'd make Cale Makar look like Eric Cairns.

I'm not convinced that it'd be 'so' much. Seth Jones at $7.5m would be a valuable asset for New York, who I imagine isn't overly willing to rebuild.

And Chicago would want Nelson because they have absolutely no center depth. And they have a horrendous veteran leadership group.

When it comes to cost, I think Chicago has the pieces to put together a pretty respectable package for the Islanders. I also imagine they'd be willing to take back Engvall if it helped their case.

I don’t think Dobson is that great at playing defense and makes mistakes often. His transition game is amazing and he has excellent offensive instincts. But his defensive awareness is lacking especially in certain situations like 3 on 3 overtime. Just my opinion from watching some islanders games. I think he’s been in Roy’s doghouse a couple times.

Yeah, I’m not convinced Jones has super positive value at 7.5 being signed to his age 35 season. That being said, the Islanders are looking for scorers for the top 6 in a trade for Dobson, and the only player that maybe matches that description on Chicago besides Bedard is Donato, who is a UFA. Just doesn’t seem like a fit.

Chances of a Bouchard / Dobson swap?
I personally would rather have Bouchard than Dobson but I don’t understand why EDM makes that deal.

As an Isles fan I can confirm, everyone here keeps talking about points, but he hasn't even been the best dman on the team this year, makes weird decisions, has size and all the tools, but the hockey defender sense isn't there, and is noticeable each game. He'll solo rush when the line is changing and rip one around the boards for the other team to breakout, its just strange, hope he gets his bag though.

For some reason I thought Dobson was already locked up at 8.5. I see he’s a pending RFA… I definitely understand being hesitant to give him what he’s probably asking for, but at the same time it’s too easy for him to point to a contract like Power and dig his heels in if he wants to get paid. He has a 70 point and two 50 point seasons behind him at age 25. I personally wouldn’t want him as my #1 or highest paid defender, but he will undoubtedly get paid. Lou doesn’t seem like the GM to handle it.

I'm surprised to find McDavid has the same agent. He took a discount on his deal, could take another one. Then you have the polar opposite in Matthews who accepts only the most predatory deals that hurt his team. Dobson taking this agency, it's hard to tell what he is going for here. With human nature, likely most money.
Seems like he is going to agency that does what the player wants.
