Rumor about Oilers offering a 1st for Cates last summer. Flyers obviously said no.

12pts in last 14 games for Cates, centering the teams best line by far and playing all situations and against toughest comp at EV. Previously received selke recognition by various sites in 22-23 and has consistently done well by the advanced metrics. My trade comp would be Brandon Hagel.

Flyers send:
Cates

Leafs send:
2026 1st (top 10 protected)
Cowan

"Oh, hey, here's a young player on a rebuilding team that is doing really well. I think my team should poach 'em."

Seriously, some of y'all are really insufferable. :shakehead

EDIT: I'm going to go hide in a corner now.

Ummmm...Flyguy isn't Leafguy...

As for the actual proposal, Leafs fans think Cowan is a bonafide superstar so I don't see him being the prospect included

And some of you can't read.
I did read; the post didn't indicate affiliation. I just mistakenly presumed that "big market team trying to poach a rebuilder's good prospect" was more likely than "rebuilding team with an excellent player attempts to trade that player away". Should've looked more closely.

In my partial defense I was paying more attention to the Stadium Series reveal and so was posting distracted. Let my f***up be a lesson to others.

Flyers seem to have 1 player always on a hot streak while the others all go cold...they seem to have a problem of not all getting hot at the same time.

Flyers fans, you guys know Cates and Laughton better than other fans. So considering we need a left handed 3c who can play in a defensive system, is willing to play physical, help on the PK and potentially net front on PP2 and who can step in to play top 6 LW for stints.
Who fits better Cates or Laughton?

Cates is a quality defensive guy, and his offense has popped surprisingly well. It remains to be seen whether this is just a random heater, or whether he's finally turned the corner and will start producing more consistently, but in either event, as far as I can tell, Tortorella is about three hard-nosed plays away from filing adoption papers, so it'll be a tough sell. That said, I could see that as the kind of return that appeals to us, too. I think the Flyers would be better served moving older players, but we shouldn't be in the habit of turning down good deals just because the guy we're giving up is on the younger end.

say its game 7 rd 1, 1 min left and you're tied and you need a hard nosed 3c, and you got Cates and Laughton on the bench, who you tapping to jump over the boards?

If I want physical play on the boards, Laughton. If I want defensive positioning and open-ice stick-checking, Cates.
I think Laughton's grit makes him the more attractive option. I can see him being a real plus in the play offs

We're not rebuilding. We're just circling the drain forever.
you guys have 6 picks in the 1st 2 rounds of the 25 draft. No matter what way you slice it, adding that much talent in 1 draft may force a rebuild due to needing room.
