Confirmed with Link: Noah Cates Re-Signed for 4 Years, 4 Million Per Year

Is this assuming Desnoyers is the next Bergeron, because I don't see anyone on the horizon that is making Cates' role expendable. He can still slide back to wing.

And if he is taking a lesser role, why would he extend and not hit the open market?

So let's say they get Desnoyers at 6.

And likely to draft another C in the 1st round ... Bear, Cootes, Murtagh...

Add Luchanko, and you possibly have your future top 3 Cs, assuming they make no other moves. All between 1-4 seasons away probably.

What if they trade for Rossi? Now you have a top 2 C for the upcoming season.

Makes sense for Cates to expire in 2029, alongside Coots in 2030.

Foerster for Rossi makes a lot of sense, especially if Martone falls to 6. And if they get a Hagens/Frondell/Desnoyers plus Rossi and Luchanko or whoever else earns it, they should have 3 competent centers to ice in the top 9

A lot of what ifs and projections and some of those guys probably aren't NHL centers anyway. And I think we are forgetting Cates in a natural winger if it gets that that point. Also any forward you take outside of the top 10 is unlikely to make an impact within that four year window (debut? sure).

I'm indifferent on the contract itself, it's fair value, but as has been said in other contract discussions, they seem to be hesitant to make tough calls. Is Cates a core player or not? If he's not trade him when he's an RFA. This is a contract a contending team gives out to keep their window open while paying for star players. We are doing what...?

Part of rebuilding is finding out who is a core player and who is not and extending core players to long term deals so that their cap hits are manageable going into the next phase and they are under team control. They did that with who? Tippett?

Yea that's usually every team. Hopefully they are better team within next 4-5 years. Only 2 years away from being 2 years away
Only Couturier, Sanheim and TK are left from their last playoff game in September 2020

If I could pick three players to still be here for their next playoff game in 2030, I'd go with Michkov, Foerster and Sanheim.

It doesn't make a lot of sense timeline-wise for the Flyers, but it's a good deal in keeping talent.

Right. I'd prefer they traded him as part of an actual rebuild while his value was at a likely peak. They aren't capable of that, though. They are capable of handing out a much worse contract than this.

By Flyers standards...they've done fine
