NTC's have cost us Marner. Don't give NTC's or NMC's to anyone who hasn't earned them.

The way you earn an NMC or NTC is by winning. Win a cup and maybe we consider an NTC.

If you don't want to sign without one then the Leafs don't need you. If Leafs bring in players without NTC's and they don't work out, then fine, we can recoup assets. It happens all the time.

Leafs have become a country club for big paydays and NTC's.

NO MORE!!

It helps sign players... they will still be given, not much you can do.

Matthews, Nylander, Domi, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Rielly, McCabe, OEL, Tanev, Carlo, Stolarz, and Woll all have some kind of protection.

Hakanpaa even had protection last year... they are very common and will continue to be common, it might bring down an AAV or sign a player who otherwise wouldn't, they aren't terrible, a bad contract you want to move still costs capital to move usually.

You also need to Join us in reality the players would NEVER allow that

Just lock them out. We are about to hit a deep recession if not worse. If youre an owner there is no skin off the back.

NMC should be removed from the CBA. Limited yes. Full NO!
Absolutely agree on that. I've been sick of this crap for years. It's 100% benefit to the player, 0% benefit to the team. What's worse if the player wants out, they still hold the team hostage by basically telling them at the time where they are willing to be traded for, and it's usually a very short list, and the other team knows the leverage and you will get much less for the player.

The most a player should get is the yearly provided list of 10 teams they don't want to be traded to.

I don't have an issue with these being given out. But they have to be limited. I cannot just trade Matthews to a bottom feeder team. They have a right to submit me a list of teams (10) that they would be willing to go to. Simple. But to outright have the ability to control everything that happens in your career for a player at Kampf, Jarnkrok levels.... no way. Just stupid, you either want to be a Leaf or not. If you dont want to be one then go sign a contract someplace else.

You guys need to realize this is also a business and not something that's just for our enjoyment.

These are also real people and most of the time real people prefer stability over nearly anything else so good luck getting top UFAs or re-signing our best players without offering some type of NTC or NMC.

Toronto always overpays and always ties their own hands.

It;s truly difficult to have hope that Brad will get it done. The minimum I believe the teams need to move in order to win is Rielly and Marner. It's that simple.

JT is probably going to cost too much compared to his replacement cost that might bring a different style of game with more speed, I don't know.

If Rielly is still on the team next year it's akin to keeping Marner. Both lack that Gamer Gear

I mean, even JP Morgan who is always saying there will be a recession has the odds at 40%.

There has been a recession coming for over 6 years now. Yet time marches on.

They'll never get rid of them unless the league and NHLPA agree to to some kind of compromise. NMC shouldn't include not being able to waive a guy. If a player earns that contract and then all of a sudden stops playing like they were when they earned that contract you should have a way out. The one thing I like about the NFL is you can restructure a contract to lower the cap hit. What if buying out a contract doesn't hurt your cap for a few years after. Idk, players deserve some peace of mind in not having to worry about getting traded randomly but I don't think teams should be held hostage if players stop trying as hard after getting their big contract. I fear we'll see another NHL lockout if the league tries to go after NMC.

Image your job traded you not so fun now is it

If a GM doesn't want to give them out they can offer more money to get the player to agree.

The player's will never give them up unless ownership is willing to give them something big in return. It's one of the few benefits them have in a cba that already flavors teams on most things.

For someone like Marner, the Leafs had until July 1, 2023 to trade him before his protection kicked in. They had 4 years to make up their mind while he was on his 2nd contract. Once that date passed, they turned over control to the player.
Maybe, it's not when you would have loved to make a decision by, but those were the terms of the agreement.

It's time for you to join reality again
Marner could have been denied one. What leverage did he have? he was an RFA.

That NMC at the tail end of Marner’s contract is IMO this team’s biggest blunder. Now they either overpay or let a top talent walk for nothing. They could have gotten a big package for him this season if he didn’t block it.

I love how teams are always expected to hold up their end of the agreement (Salary, NMC etc) but somehow players who don't do the same (goals..points) are just considered bad contracts to have to lug around until they expire. The NFL is called Not For Long for a reason...you live up to the deal or you ship out (except QB's for some reason).

Gary would never let that happen, just increase revenue sharing and the Cap would fall.
