Toronto is signing Alex Bishop from the University of Toronto to a ATO. He’s replacing the injured Petr Mrazek as Jack Campbell’s backup tonight. Due to cap constraints, they can’t (yet) call up someone from the AHL Marlies
This early in the year is pretty scary

It was a brilliant move. Now they have triggered the emergency recall rule, and Hutch doesn't count against the cap.

A very well played move.

Now that I think about it it was even better than I thought - if they had chosen to send down amadio and played a man short up front, then they wouldn't have been able to sign an ATO replacement and wouldn't have been able to trigger the emergency recall. The Leafs would then have had to play a man short until healthy again, like Colorado is stuck doing at the moment (and Vegas was stuck doing for 10 games last year).

But by taking advantage of the unique goalie rules, they were able to sign an ebug ATO, trigger the emergency recall, and now lose nobody and have a free backup goalie replacement indefinitely without hurting any of the roster at all.

Perfect, really.

They needed both liljegren and sandin in the line up tonight. You can’t play with 5 D. Having Holl, Matthews & Mrazek unavailable to play, but count against the cap this early in the season when space hasn’t had time to accrue would put any team in a bind.
Which is why I ended my comment with “Holl being sick was the difference”

From Mirtle and the Athletic. Sheds a bit of light on their decision

One of the main rules with roster emergency exceptions is that the “free” player that is recalled can only make up to $100,000 more than the league minimum salary — which this season equates to $850,000.

Hutchinson’s cap hit is just $725,000. Liljegren’s is $863,333. One option works as an emergency exception. The other does not.

That means that, theoretically, as long as Petr Mrazek is out with a groin injury, Liljegren could have been stuck down in the AHL. The Leafs could have recalled a defenceman with a smaller salary as an exception, like Alex Biega or Brennan Menell, but with no exact timeline on when Mrazek will be back, there could potentially be a wait for a young blueliner the organization wants to see in the lineup regularly.

Lol. Hey they're all finally figuring it out.

Opinion | The Leafs’ goalie manoeuvre was a stroke of salary-cap genius. Other teams might try it
