I think SJ was expecting some contender to pony up for Kahkonen and pay a high price. When none of the buyers budge, they did this to kick the can down the road one year.

Instead of letting KK walk for nothing, they flip him for a guy that has some term and hope VV can turn it around enough to be worth a flyer at next years deadline (good luck).

Oof. Vitek desperately needed a change of scenery but I don't think playing in San Jose is going to help fix his crushing lack of confidence. He might be able to find better hibachi options though.

Kahkonen was San Jose's Vitek

We should get a better idea if our current team is truly goalie killers or not as well these last 20 games.

Both these guys have played on bad teams but have better underlying numbers then our goalies.

If they maintain their levels of play, then we know it was largely a goalie problem, if they all sink, then we know we have a bigger problem with the skaters and system

Vitek era comes to an end. good guy had a good regular season up untill about Feb last season, fell apart by playoffs and after and never recovered for this one all year long

What a strange end to this season.

A full NHL tandem switch tryout.
Good news for Vitek is that I'm sure there are plenty more Hibachi Restaurants in San Jose... :sarcasm:

Devils changed coaches so there still won’t be anything definite about whether the Ruff coached team was killing goalies.

Vanacek going to SJ would probably say more but the number of games will be pretty small so won’t be anything definitive.

Boy are they in for a nasty surprise.

Grier may have inadvertently thrown Fitz a life-line here.

WOOOO!!!!

I don't feel bad for him at all. He soured the f*** out of me this year. He doesn't come out to talk to the media at all this year. Guy acted like a complete coward.

The only reason I'm not backing the bus over him and just throwing him under the bus is because I believe he has mental issues that caused him to blowup around the playoffs or after them.

He really turned me off this year. I think they either wanted to get his STINK off the team or they knew it was never going to work here again.

The worst thing that could have happened was some dumb market correction to end the year like Schneider's 2019 part of 18-19, where he's a .920% over his last 10 games or something and they decided to keep him next year based on that.
Dude, Vtek has always been a choker in important games and the playoffs. His entire career. See: Caps tenure

I literally said this when they signed him. He probably wanted off the team after getting shit on by the coaching staff repeatedly and finally his teammate(s) in the media.

Needed to go, but it's gonna be funny when he posts good #s with the Sharks since there is no pressure.

Grier is far and away the worst GM in the league. He's didn't deserve the job in the first place. Joke of a hire and obvious from day 1.

7th round pick and a guy signed for next year who couldn't be here next year for a guy that's a UFA? I thought Kahkonen would return more than that for a team like Colorado that needed a backup to rest Georgiev down the stretch, if they didn't pick up MAF, who they didn't pick up either.

One other thing I posted on the Sharks board. Vitek played his best here last year at times where Blackwood was a threat to steal his job/steal starts from him. If you notice, his play fell off a bit in December while Blackwood was still hurt. Then Blackwood came back and had that game in Florida, after Vitek was pulled in Carolina the night before.

Vitek played some of his best goalie of his career from about Christmas through all star break when Blackwood was healthy and able to play. Then his play dipped again at some point in February/March and Blackwood was yet again injured around that time. He finished the regular season strong in the last couple of weeks and then Blackwood was relegated to third string goalie after game 82.

With no more threat of Blackwood taking games from him, he stunk up the joint in the playoffs.

Now with Blackwood breathing down his neck again, he may be able to turn it around somewhat.

Not sure why we keep giving San Jose 7th rounders.... they have this year's and next year's now. I know they're essentially worthless but grabbing someone and having them on reserve list is not a bad thing late. Weird stuff - the 7th in the Meier trade was weird too. Not mad at it though.
