Not a bad offer and as a Habs fan, I think I might make this trade if the 2020 1st was unprotected. It will be interesting to watch Caufield's value as he plays next season in the NCAA for the first time. His value could sky rocket or stall.

Butcher is a decent young LD that I'd be interested in but the gamble of trading Caufield for me would be worth the unprotected 1st.

It's more complicated than top paring D vs 1st line winger. If Caufield turns into a 40 goal scorer and Smith turns into Mete who needs a guy like Weber to compliment him, I pick Caufield. Just an example.

Regardless, Neither team likes the Smith for Caufield straight up trade.

What about if the 2020 1st is lottery protected? So if it is top 3, it remains NJ's and the Habs get NJD 2021 1st. but if it is 4-31, MTL receives it.

I'd think about it a bit but likely say no. The idea is we take the 1st with the outside chance it could be a lottery pick. We are not trading Caufield without the shot at the lottery pick. I posted this on the Habs trade board so you can monitor the comments and how the answers vary. Make no mistake about it, the answer will vary within our fan base. Some are drooling over any chance at getting Lafreniere

I think the opportunity for the Devils to have Hughes and Caufield together is too good to pass up so I think the Devils should try to acquire Caufield if possible.

We can re-visit this idea on draft day 2020. We both get to see how good Caufield is and what your pick ends up being. Hard to say we trade Caufield if he has a very good NCAA and WJC season. I'm very curious to see what this kid can do

not saying he will or should be traded in a deal for someone like Caufield, but he is a fine enough player

At this point, its not a fair trade for either team.
Smith has had one year to prove his worth since his draft season, now all devil fans are drooling over him.

Lets give Caufield one year in the NCAA. If he dominates, there is no way we trade exactly who we need and havent had in ages for a D. We need a pure goalscorer. Caufield is a mini ovy
