Speculation: NJ desperate for a high end 3c/decent 2c

NJ isn't looking for a rental. We are basically looking for someone to fill the Mcleod role who can take a ton of defensive minutes (to help out Nico since he's the only one capable of playing in all scenarios) and wouldn't look out of place rolling with high end talent or can even step up and be a 2c if necessary from injuries. If NJ loses Nico to injury we have no one and that is our biggest weakness. As I said we aren't looking for a rental nor is it the Fitz move to go for rentals. If we traded for someone they would need multiple years left at a decent cap hit. I know this would be a pricey addition but some players in my eyes would be available for trade for the right player. We have pieces such as Casey available and I wouldn't even be opposed to including Mercer in a deal for a clear upgrade. Anyone have any ideas? Just curious on who's around.

I feel like Compher or Copp kinda fit what you're looking for, but both have a higher cap hit than they're worth. Danault would be a perfect fit, but LA would be stupid to trade him.

Would NJ want Coleman back (if Calgary would even trade him idk)? Pinto from Ottawa?

If NJ wants a higher-end option and to reallocate some cap, I wonder how all sides would feel about a Hamilton for Norris or Hamilton for Couturier trade?

Colton will probably be available if the Avs make another move. He's a good player but not a great fit for the Avs.
This is the one, right here.
Has a NMC, would waive for his childhood team to come back home too. Devs work a deal with Chi for Donato and Murphy. Keep Donato and ship Murphy to Avs for Ross. Add one more depth player (Tanev, Ocoonor, Frederic) and go!

Resign Donato and OC with some guys coming off the books.

JGP for Arseny Gritsyuk and one of those 2025 2nd rounders.
Pass, Grits may be the internal addition fir the playoffs

Backlund's always been someone who felt like he could be a quintessential-Devil, but Flames are both fighting with the Canucks for the last wildcard spot and don't want to do any favours to the Devils since they own the Devil's first this year.

Sure would be nice to have a Logan Cooley right about now...

I'd love to get Barzal out of NYI.

Mercer + Nemec as a base?

More realistic would be guys like Copp or Dickinson? Maybe McTavish or Cozens?

Compher is exactly what you want but idk if you want him at his cap number.
I mean, his cap is fully in line with upper 3rd line/lower 2nd line centers. Especially so with the cap skyrocketing. If you want a solid middle 6 C, you aren't going to get someone under $4-5M/yr unless you have a homegrown on a sweetheart deal.

This is Backlund to a tee. Provides top of the NHL level defensive play for a centre, while boosting any linemates he lines up with production. Calgary retaining half gets you 2.25M for this year and next for the cap hit. What would be the add from Calgary to get Mercer back for Backlund?

We are crossing in to fantasy land, but a retained Backlund and Coleman to the devils for Mercer plus could be a dream for both franchises.

Backlund would be a great addition for the Devils but not for Mercer. I'd also love to get Coleman back to the Devils but with him there are similar issues that I don't want to trade Mercer for someone as old as Coleman or Backlund.

Can’t go wrong with Brock Nelson…if he resigns with them
Nelson would be a luxury, but I'm not sure he wants to be a 3rd line center. He probably also wants more money than the Devils are willing to pay him.

It would be a different situation without Palat, Pesce and Dillon. The Devils already pay $ 15.5 M for three players that aren't worth their contracts. Or maybe I'm being too hard for Pesce, but he hasn't been good lately either.

Barzel doesn’t make much sense, you guys already have Hughes and Hischier as your 1-2 punch and Barzel is making 9M forever
He's so dynamic, he'd be a perfect fit for our system. He could slide to the wing if everyone's healthy (or Hughes could), but you need center depth to win cups. And it's not like he's overpaid at 9M - he's a 70-80+ point play driving center on the New York Islanders...

Barzal - Hischier - Noesen
Palat - Hughes - Bratt
Cotter - Haula - Meier

Those top 2 lines would create matchup problems for the opponent.

Or they could just roll 3 lines with 3 elite skating #1 centers:

Cotter - Hischier - Meier
Palat - Hughes - Bratt
Haula - Barzal - Noesen

I'd probably lobby for the latter, and then load em up when necessary.
