Proposal: NJ-CAL

Is Kevin Bahl related to former Flame defenceman Kevin Dahl?
I suddenly want Bahl
and wish to find a Dahl
Just to give fits to
Rick Ball

Yes, I will see myself out, and feel free to pelt me with tomatoes and eggs as I am doing so.

How about just Bahl for Markstrom?

As bad as Bahl has been, taking him out without replacing him makes our left side woefully thin.

You'd be betting the season on Luke Hughes being good enough to be an every game top 4 D. Not out of the realm of possibility, but also not fair on the kid.

Bahl also kills penalties (badly), so we'd need to find a defender who can do that too.

NJ needs a top 4 LD and a starting goalie. Not easy players to find.

Defensive anarchy.

NCAA-level goaltending.

Utter lack of toughness.

FItz has to do SOMETHING or simply write off the season.

EVEN if -- as is likely now that he has let these glaring problems fester -- he has to pay through the nose without any leverage.

Proposal -- Bahl, 24 2nd and 25 3rd for Markstrom (1/3 retention) and Tanev (no retention).

NJ gets a three-playoffs solution in net and immediate help on D; Calgary gets draft capital and a cost-controlled D to replace one of the three D who will be walking out the door.
That's a weak offer to Cal... otherwise known to nearly everyone else as Cgy or Calgary.

No idea why they'd look at this. Could sell Tanev for a higher draft pick at 50% retention.

Maybe just offer Bahl for Tanev

That’s also a weak rebuttal.
Is it? Bahl looks like a legit #5. He's on a cheap contract and he's 23, 6'6 and 230 lbs. This is the guy you'd want on a team that is somewhat rebuilding with little leverage to retain Tanev other than overpay him to stay.

Bahl will be under team control for several more seasons. Tanev is a rental UFA. He'll be 34 in a few days.

Bahl would be worth at least a high 2nd round pick today if traded. Tanev is worth what? Can't be much more than that.

If I'm off on value, it isn't by much. And if I were the Flames knowing the team isn't a contender and will lose several UFAs this summer or sooner, I'd want to start my rebuild with guys that were 23 and NHL ready.

Why would NJ do that? Give up a young defender who fits the profile of what the team needs on the backend who maybe can improve to be a number four with years of team control left for a declining one year RFA who is just a broken down version of the same thing? If Bahl is worth a second in trade I'd think Tanev is worth significantly less. Value aside it just doesn't make sense for NJ. They aren't some sort of Capitals or Penguins team hoping to squeeze a bit more from an aging core. They need all the cost controlled medium to long term contributors they can get. Lost in the shuffle this season is that NJ is still building. Hughes of course is a rookie as is Holtz and Bahl is only in his second full season and Nemec has not even been called up yet. The Devils are not yet a finished product and it is hard to see them overpaying for a rental. Beyond that, Tanev is a righty and wouldn't displace any of the guys currently playing on the right side. Maybe Miller if he falters but he's been good since returning from injury and has meshed well with Luke Hughes.

This screams panic move but if Bahl hasn't been good New Jersey picking up Zadorov to fill the Graves hole would make sense
He's been ok. Above 50% in his advanced stats numbers with a PDO around 975. I'd say he's been a bit unlucky but he's young and still has some runway to improve from ok to good which probably happens if the team can return and keep its injured players healthy.

That's the OP.

So it has both Balh and Tanev in there. That's why. Someone said Tanev was a lot more valuable than Bahl... and I disagreed with that conclusion. Still do.

At some point we are going to need some top 4 defenders to make a deep run in the playoffs. I dont think giving Luke this full year, Bahl another and Nemec a couple games this and start next year makes the D good enough. Maybe the following year but jeez thats eating into the term that we got great economical signings out of the core. With that I am still not sure a G move is still in the cards this summer. We're getting there but takin our sweetazz time doing it

Yeah, at some point a team has to turn to the trade market to fill some holes

I get that, but until they have a goalie lined up I'm not worried about adding a rental defender. This season is a transition year of sorts. Last year they overachieved and it may have given the team a bit of a false sense of security. Two years ago they selected second overall then they jump to third overall in season. The reality is probably somewhere in the middle which we are seeing play out right now. Beyond that, if that team stats twitter posted today is accurate, the skaters are doing ok and the team has had mediocre goaltending and some bad luck. I'd think they look to add a goalie if anything but as always, teams want to move older declining players who have term left which isn't what NJ needs.

Hanifin would not be a rental
The others yes

I'd argue the transition was last yr ahead of sked and not what we expected. But being 3rd all year was not fluky, gotta build off of it. Yes the G is a big part of that. But VV looks vanilla now and we all expected last years version. If Fitz gets a Saros in a summer move as I mentioned somewhere, now you need the D. It's not a "this than that," it could be a "that, then this".
These next 3 gms are a big indicator of which direction this team is headed. Got some confidence with Buf, let's see how tonight goes.

We're both right apparently. Giving the game to the Isles tonight. Hamilton, Bahl etc are not playing well at all. I'm done with VV! Not all on him but 3rd goal tonight, gotta find a way to get a save when needed
