Defensive anarchy.

NCAA-level goaltending.

Utter lack of toughness.

FItz has to do SOMETHING or simply write off the season.

EVEN if -- as is likely now that he has let these glaring problems fester -- he has to pay through the nose without any leverage.

Proposal -- Bahl, 24 2nd and 25 3rd for Markstrom (1/3 retention) and Tanev (no retention).

NJ gets a three-playoffs solution in net and immediate help on D; Calgary gets draft capital and a cost-controlled D to replace one of the three D who will be walking out the door.

If Bahl was someone that Flames pro scouts could see being an asset down the road then the core of this is a sound trade. I don’t think Bahl is above replacement value really though, I wouldn’t expect that he’d be long for the league.

I imagine the Flames would rather take bad a bad contract than retain for three years too. Looking at NJ’s cap there’s no obvious candidates.

Bahl has been really disappointing and I wouldn't blame Calgary fans for not being interested. I think it really was Bahl's play last year (not the arrival of Luke) that made Graves expendable. He was great and ended up playing first pair minutes with Hamilton in a lot of games. Coming into this season he has just taken a major step back... also very disappointing that he is such a large human and apparently he has no idea. Doesn't use his size whatsoever.

There needs to be a better asset in there for the Flames. Mercer is a good target. Retain 50% on Markstrom. Also, you guys would be better off with Zadorov than Tanev. You'd need to add a 3rd as well. If we retain on Zadorov that changes to a 2nd.

Mercer has gone from untouchable to "why would you even want him at this point"
He's one of the several Devils along with Palat, Hamilton, Siegenthaler that seem to have contracted polio.

Poor form strikes even great players. Maybe this bump in the road combined with other factors makes Mercer a topic of discussion if you are getting a superstar goalie back but I doubt the Devils have any interest in liquidating him into several short-term patches. Same with Siegenthaler. Hamilton is just a guy you have to live with the swings. And Palat is ostensibly there for the playoffs.

Not saying you are wrong about the poor form, but it shouldn’t cloud long-term thinking.

Bahl I agree is pretty much a JAG and I doubt of substantial interest as a main piece going back in this kind of offer or any other offer for a significant addition. I do think Tanev would be a terrific addition as a elite defensive RHD to balance out the blueline, even if just as a rental. I’d be less sold on giving up significant assets for 3 years of a 33 year-old Markstrom especially if asking the Flames to retain (which would be a must) drives up the value. Markstrom as a rental would be way more appealing. I think the goalie acquisition needs to be either truly long-term or a no-strings attached contract short-term boost. Markstrom would no doubt be an improvement but is kind of in that no man’s land of older and erratic in performance but you’d be committed as well.

They would take Mercer in a minute almost any team in the league would....Jumping ship a little quick don't you think....In the end young teams do take steps back to go two forwards or maybe they turn it around going fwd

Where to start....

So the Devils are going to trade a pick they no longer own (2024 2nd round pick) and a 2025 5th rounder and a guy with an effective cap hit of $1,050,000

for a guy where they are taking on $4,000,000 of his $6,000,000 cap hit AND a guy with a $4,500,000 cap hit.

when they currently have $1,524,167 in cap space...

Oh and one guy they are trading for has a full no-move clause and the other has a 10-team no-trade clause.

(later figures courtesy the Cap Friendly trade calculator which is an excellent resource in these scenarios that is underused)

Glad to see another long-window Devils fan around these parts. Feels like the fan base wants to mortgage everything for one run when the team isn't remotely built like that.

Agree in terms of tangible assets (ignoring the numerous issues with the actual proposal) this seems light for what Calgary would want - this read basically like a massive cap dump for nothing which doesn't seem to make sense from a Flames perspective either.

i propose the traffic cone to go the other way. unforunately he has a nmc.

hamilton is not real bad. just to richely paid if not needed as a ppqb. his defensive game is mostly meh and to hide his lack of skating abilty he throws himself on the ice at every opportunity when the other team breaks out fast. pathetic.

So Bahl + Vitek + a 3rd Rounder
For Markstrom

Cannot happen until December 18th in order to work for cap purposes. And presumably even then bc they have to promote someone in this plan as that would them right exactly at the cap.

That said seems in the neighborhood of the plausible

Highly unlikely Marky waives. Also don't see Calgary making him available for less than an overpayment

Classic HFB post,
“here’s what we won’t miss
for exactly what my team needs”
That likely wont get either from Flames, surely not both
Hopeful contenders pay 1st’s to fill their key holes.
If they don’t pay, another contender will
