Nicolas Roy to have hearing with NHL Player Safety for cross checking Trent Frederic

He whiffed completely. It wound up hitting his visor. In fact, it his his visor before he crosschecks him. Video start point is set to show it...

This clearly shows what happened, it's not a play on the puck at all. It's a reaction to Fredric getting his gloves and stick up that he judges horribly.

You commonly see guys get their glboes and sticks up and joust in such cases, again Roy just misjudged it horribly.

He paid the price putting his team down a guy for 5 minutes in OT and getting the gate. I think that's enough personally considering the intent wasn't there.

Really don't need to deter such behaviour with any additional punishment, putting your team down 5 minutes is enough, Roy knows he messed up

McDavid got 3 in the season for the same thing more or less. Playoff games are worth more though. Maybe 2 games?

This is such a weird one, because if he's trying to play the puck then what hell is he thinking? If he's not trying to play the puck... then what the hell is he thinking? Don't think he's a guy with a history of being dirty so I tend to lean toward him having a total brain fart rather than something malicious, but that should be a 1-2 game suspension regardless.

You’re right, for some reason on the other angle when I first watched it I thought his stick got the puck

Honestly infuriating as a Habs fan. How do we have 3 crosschecks to the face go uncalled and unpunished where Roy might get games on top of his 5 minute major?

f***ing bush league.

I want to believe that somehow Roy didn't intend to do that because if that was on purpose it's just bizarre. He didn't even seem heated and I didn't see some awful play by Frederic that warranted some kind of revenge. Roy would not have wanted to take a 5 minute major that would have certainly sunk his team in the game and series

So 1 game imo. 3 games if it weren't playoffs. Really though it should be more games, but I'm going with what I'd expect compared to other suspensions

Benn gave a crosscheck to an Avs players face in game 7 that caused blood and got a double minor high stick.

follow through playing the puck... no penalty

The follow through rule only covers situations where you'd otherwise call high sticking, and only applies to, verbatim, "accidental contact on an opponent if the act is committed as a normal windup or follow through of a shooting motion." Furthermore, "a wild swing at a bouncing puck would not be considered a normal windup or follow through and any contact to an opponent above the height of the shoulders shall be penalized accordingly."

Even further, those phrases are in rule 60.1 about high sticking. There is no such exception in rule 59, the rule about cross checking.

On a side note, the NHL is one of the few leagues in the world where a follow through is not penalized. The rules I worked under (USA Hockey) called for assessing a high sticking penalty even if it was on a windup or follow through. Also, drawing blood with a high stick (which would only really happen if the player wasn't wearing a full facemask) counts as causing an injury, and is penalized with a major plus game misconduct instead of a double minor like the NHL.

Perfect explanation and I didn't notice it last night but you're right. Frederic clearly gets his hands and stick up beforehand, completely reactionary to the motion Frederic is making.

Good catch

Except frederics arms, hand and stick way below the neck and Roy's arms hand and stick was head level. Theres no justification here.

Is about all I can come up with. He should be forced to watch my OF for an hour, unless he's into that, then we'll find something else.

2 games minimum, there was zero justification to cross check him directly in the face like he did. That was blatantly an attempt to injure
Shouldn't have been a penalty based on the calls that have been made in the playoffs so far. There have been many crosschecks to the face not called at all.
