If you have a play driver on a line it allows someone like Hoffman, Toffoli, or Caufield to start putting up points. It also allows marginal players to look like regulars. When you don't have anyone driving play, just a lot of guys trying to find open space, you have the habs this year. The habs have a lot of nice complementary players who can do well in certain situations, but they absolutely can't create those situations.
The team is also pretty close to the cap without any real impact players, so it probably deserves nominations for an award for worst intentional changes to a hockey team during an offseason. Sure, some of the changes were injuries, and that's rough, but the intentional changes were all to remove players who were needed and replace them by players who are redundant, even problematic, given who is already there.
