Value of: Nico Sturm to NJ What's the cost?

We have lost two bottom forwards (Lazar -C, Bastian -W) for some time. Sturm is in the last year of his deal paying him $2M. Jersey would have to have them retain or move someone once they get back to be cap compliant. Sturm fits the need very well, Center, big body, can skate get in the dot, top 20 in hits. Fitz has Grier's number already on speed dial, what's the ask?

I like Sturm. Not the most physical, for his size, but good enough. Don't expect "toughness" from him, but he can withstand physical play. Can really skate, plays a sound defensive game, good on FO's. No drama off ice.

If i was SJ I would keep him around unless you get a good offer. I mean, what is a 3rd going to do for them? They need legit NHL'ers, even if they are 4th liners.

A 3rd is a trade chip for acquiring a defenseman in the summer. We have tons of quality bottom-6 players right now, Sturm will definitely get traded at the deadline. Plus Sturm is very competitive and I think we almost 'owe' it to him in a sense to get him to a contender after two and a half years of Bad.

A 3rd seems fair, I'd probably still do it for a 4th.

A 3rd is going to give them an asset to use to either trade for a player to replace Sturm or another position or to move up in the draft. Both things are what rebuilding teams ought to be doing. There's no guarantee that Sturm will want to stay here after three seasons of being nowhere near the playoffs. We also have Barclay Goodrow that they could slide down to the 4C spot to replace Sturm if it really comes down to it. They could also use the vacancy to give someone like Filip Bystedt a test run in the NHL if he continues to have a solid rookie campaign. That 3rd or 4th is way more useful than Sturm on an expiring contract.

He's in the last year of his deal, does he gain much more value at the TD? As I said I'd trade back Bastian. His role has changed from year to year net front once upon a time, PK, pseudo tough/gritty guy. We have all those pieces now.

No, i don't think he gains more value. I think the deal is good for NJ, making them even faster, big, and defensively responsible. I am a big believer in trading for a player earlier rather than at the TDL, as it gives them more time to adjust to the new team.

I just don't get it for SJS. They've got picks ... if they like Bastian, then sure, but otherwise, they need some stability, and to start learning how to win games on a consistent basis.

I'd take Bastian straight up.
He's hurt right now but you'd be sold imo

Other alternatives include

Faksa 50% from the blues
Acciari or Eller from the pens
Evans from the habs

3rd or maybe even as cheap as a 4th seems to be the market here. What would the rest of the market cost?

We have five picks in the upcoming draft. They'll want more still. They still need to have an influx of young talent while they're rebuilding.

Frankly, Sturm isn't very good - on a playoff team, he's probably a healthy scratch on most nights. I'll accept a 5th but hope for more.

I have zero desire whatsoever to keep Sturm. He's easily replaceable.
