Is it normal that a guy who is spending many hours each day with 20 or 25 teamates speaking one main language (in his case: english) is unable to give an interview after 2-3-4 seasons ? Is the guy hard headed or just dumb ? Vladdy made tons of $$$$ coming from North American fans. Basic coutresy is speak their language. Gary Carter understood that.

He knows what he needs to play baseball with English teammates and coaches. He's just not gonna do interviews in another language and risk stupid media types twisting his words.

You know RDS and TVA would do the same.

I’m not a Gallagher fan by any stretch but it takes skill to score 31 goals in 2017-18, 33 goals in 2018-19 and to have been on a 30 goal pace in 2019-20 until the pandemic cut the season short.

That’s 3 straight years of 30 goals or more production (or pace for the third season).

He’s broken down and has had accidental hand injuries but that doesn’t deter from the fact that his level of skill allowed for that significant goal production while achieving it without the benefit of playing with top end offensive line mates as he would have had on most other teams.

Most of his goals are from grinding in front of the net and and direct result of his perseverance and desire. His NHL highlight reel isn't filled with him beating endless players 1 on 3. His clips are all of him out working other players and jamming pucks into the net right before he is obliterated in retaliation.

There are far more talented players than Gallagher that never play more than a few games (if any) in the NHL because they don't have his drive and work ethic.

Reminds me of when Crosby and Ribeiro's coach was asked if Crosby was the most talented player he ever coached. He said that Reberio had the most talent and ability he had ever seen but Crosby had a substantially better work ethic.

All these players are so talent that the margins are very small. Gallagher is one of the hardest working players in the NHL and his body is starting to show it.

Gallagher is all heart and perseverance. It takes massive balls to skate to the front of the net and take the abuse he does on every single shift.

He does this every single shift and every single night. That is what makes Gallagher so successful. Gallagher is no where near the talent of other players but he has abnormally high work ethic and perseverance. You can have a great career doing exactly what he does driving the net over and over. You can also score a pile of goals like he has done from 3 feet away from the net. Most just can't take the punishment and Gallagher certainly doesn't shy away from that.

Whether an A or a C; this is the type of person you want in your leadership group. Players see Gallagher taking a beating on every single shift and it is infectious. They look and think "If he can do it at his size what is my excuse". It pushes the while group to be better and work harder.

I've never been the most interested in making sure Habs players know French, or even coaches. But Suzuki saying the same thing the Air Canada guy said is a bit cringe and idt everyone who handles the media in house was very happy about it.

You know as well as I do that the media will be all over him when the team is losing, they will bring up everything including the language issue, one more year would have been better timing. Just wait and see, I will be right.
You’re right that they’ll whine, hopefully this time it gets ignored so extensively that they give up with that nonsense

The post I was replying to claimed that Gallagher had no skill. It certainly takes skill to score 30 plus goals per season for 3 years (the 3rd season on a prorated basis but he was on pace before COVID nixed it) even if his goals do not generally have the most polish.

There is no valid reason for a politician to be commenting on this issue.
Sure there is… it’s election season. Any topic that holds a specific voter segments attention is par for the course - and there is a sliver of the francophone baby boom voting block for whom Habs & language are synonymous

This type of shit is exactly why Huberdeau commented recently that he wasn't sure as a francophone he wanted to play here. It's ridiculous.
For years now, the local players do NOT want to come to Montreal.
Certain media folks should probably look in the mirror and ask why.
Brutal, that it keeps coming up, year after year.
It should be about a WINNING hockey team, and in Montreal, it's made out to be about politics.

Exactly. Anyone surprised politicians are “appropriating“ habs culture for their agenda during election season has not been around this city/province much. In a few years the boomer journalists will be retired, Suzuki will be able and say the word puck in french (take it easy folks, this situation is nowhere near the stress of people learning a new language to be able and earn a living - we’re talking toddler level conversational french about hockey…). Season will start and we’ll talk about hockey again :)
