Wondering what a team in the playoff hunt would give up to acquire NHL veteran Nick Schultz from the Philadelphia Flyers.

A 5th round pick if he's playing up to his level at his age. Nothing if he continues declining. Not much to discuss here.

Schultz will turn 34 in August and is still a decent shot blocker. Schultz has always gone about his game quietly, but then again a stay at home defensive player such as Schultz isn't gonna stand out on most nights nor will he put up a lot of points. He's good at moving the puck up the ice and is really a help in his own zone.

Could be a good veteran presence in the locker room as a 6th or 7th defenseman depth player.

You've convinced me. Sounds like a good guy for a team like PHI.

To add further context, Schultz could be moved because if Provy makes the Flyers, they will have 8 Dmen. Plus will have Morin pushing to make the team by years end.

As for what he gets...anywhere from a 3rd-5th. Mike Weber fetched a 3rd last deadline and Schultz is a better player than him.

Schultz is way better, but Weber has reputation for being gritty and hard to play against. Teams will pay a premium for that, even if the player sucks.

I'd rather keep him tbh. He had a good playoffs and we'd get more out of a Streit trade.
The way I feel.

I believe a D-man will get moved before training camp.

I'm wondering how much value MDZ would have at the TDL (or before) . I'm a believer he was the Flyers best defenseman last season before he got hurt.

That value range seems about right. In terms of Mike Weber as a comparable, he’s five years younger and ranked ahead of Schultz in both production and puck possession per 60 minutes last year based on HERO chart comparisons. He also had a lower cap hit, and the Sabres retained 50% at the deadline.

Schultz received playoff praise and is generally considered a solid penalty killer, but the Flyers’ PK unit was the second worst in the entire playoffs last year at just over 70% and allowed five power play goals in one game, with Schultz on the ice for the last four. He finished as one of the top dozen shot-blocking defensemen last season, but also placed in the bottom dozen for shot suppression in all situations among defensemen with over 750 minutes played. His even strength pairing with Streit playing through injury skews the view a bit, so it’s tough to gauge how his value is trending now, especially with Russell, Seidenberg, Mike Weber and other UFAs with similar or broader skill sets still available.

Hextall is patient, and will probably wait and see if Provorov makes the team before moving anyone. Gudas was just extended and Ghost is up next. MacDonald and Manning are both essentially insurance policies for expansion draft requirements, both needing ice time to qualify in terms of games played while not having much trade value or waiver benefit. They would get more for Streit, but he also has their largest defensive cap hit and a modified NTC. With Del Zotto returning from injury, Schultz might be the first in line to go.

Considering it would be addition by subtraction, I don't think the Flyers would ask for much at all. Clearing his cap space, and allowing a young player to fill that spot is good all in itself.

We could use an extra vet LHD, but that'll be more of a deadline acquisition. I'd be much more interested from an Islanders perspective in getting Streit back.

We would be willing to move him as well. He is only owed 2 million in real money so frugal owners would like that.

We don't have frugal owners anymore but we'll be happy to have him. He'd be our #6 and it'd be nice to see him back. He was one of my favorite defensemen.
Where did he go?

Right now I don't suspect Schultz would garner much demand. Still a couple of adequate free agent dmen available. Over the course of a season if a team needs to bolster their bottom pairing, or a minor TDL deal I could see him getting a low 4th-5th round pick. Depending on his season of course

I was talking about Streit coming back to the Islanders.

I'm sure Flyers fans would do it willingly, to clear some room for Provorov to play this year. Not sure if Hexy and Snow will agree to such an arrangement...

Schultz played very well in the playoffs. He will have value.

I don't know if I'd trade Streit to the Islanders or any division rival before the season without them paying a premium.

Bonus is already paid might as well get our best deal. 2 mil or one mil at the TDL is a steal for Streit.

He could be a Mike Weaver #2 for the Habs.. something like Brian Flynn and a 7th round pick 2019 could work? :D
