You're not thrilled, yet signing Tatar would make you happy, who was healthy scratched in the playoffs. Makes sense.

Tatar isn't a very exciting option but he is a regular season scorer who would generate a good amount of offense to help Toronto get to the dance. Won't do a lick for us in the playoffs once in though.

Another solid signing by Dubas

I had this offseason as a C- before we signed Kase and Ritchie

After I got it at about B-/B

My dream would be to somehow send Engvall+ for a 2-3M forward who can play and has established reputation as a producer

Still offsrason has made me interested enough to be hopeful for next years initial regular season games. Not excited but curious/hopeful

Except it does. If we send down Brooks and Gabriel we are about 100k under the cap.

Actually Cap Friendly. com lays things out pretty good
They list 23 man roster which includes 15 forwards including Gabriel at 750,000,plus Kase at 1.250
Only 6 D listed and the 2 goalies
Also Phil Kessel's buyout at 1.2 mil is included
Now if the Leafs ITR Kase and send down Gabriel bring up Liljgren at 863 500 the Leafs would be at the cap limit of 81,500,000 with 91.000 left to spend.
Ilya Mikeyev moved replaced by Kase would leave Toronto plus 236,000 going with 22 players..

I will never understand the hate for Engvall and this myth that he has poor finish and can’t produce.

Over the past 2 years at 5v5 he has scored at the same rate as Boeser and Nugent-Hopkins. (0.8 per 60)

Yeah, the Leafs have done well here.

If it doesn't work, there will be big changes next offseason.

This pickup is solid.
You already know sire kb what it is. I am really excited also with the fights and penalty minutes this guy brings  We gon get a lot of hits, hyman didn't hit that often, although he was a real warrior in other wesays sire.

Ritchie might even play on our first powerplay unit like he did in boston? Or does y'all think simmonds will still stand tall there? They might change that thang up hard next season. Or is I wrong there?

Now we have 2 hard thugs who can play to share the toughness...and Ritchie likes to hear the boards rattle after his hits. Even Bunting on the PP...he's got good hands and likes to chirp and get in people's faces. Tom Wilson might think twice knowing he may have to go with Ritchie and/or Simmonds.

Change is good so far. Now get me one hard rock D 6/7!

minus the loss of Zach Hyman for the #1LW spot filled by Ritchie now.

If the salary cap wasn't the driving force behind these moves Leafs could have ...

Hyman -- Matthews -- Marner
Foligno -- Tavares --- Nylander
Galchenyuk -- Kerfoot -- Mikheyev

(our playoff roster) & now

Ritchie -- Matthews -- Marner
Bunting -- Tavares -- Nylander
Mikeyev -- Kampf --- Kerfoot

4th line remains status quo with Spezza, Simmonds, Engval/Brooks and only missing Thornton (replaced by Gabriel).

Which top 9 would one prefer believing it gives the Leafs best chance of winning a playoff round?
Second one. Saw the first already

We actually never saw that first lineup in a playoff game and Foligno was our 4th line C by Game 7.

Agree on giving the new group a good look though, we know the first didn't succeed.

foligno played like 5 minutes on that line

Let’s not forget the Ritchie intimidation factor might get Auston the extra few inches of space he needs. I’m excited by the Ritchie and Bunting pickups

There’s no question our stars have been given some air cover. Now they have to produce
That's what I hate the most about this... I know they will. The worst apart about being a leaf fan is we have to wait all season long until playoffs before the real questions get answered... They're good. They're performers, just can't put it together and be performers together come playoffs.

It's evaluating whether the new players we put in are going to make the difference (in terms of whatever they can bring) as a whole come playoffs. Right now I'm not at 100% confident, but I'm banking that on this team they know they're being brought in to fill in the missing ingredient we lacked and it's pretty obvious to everyone what that is.. and they all have the potential to be that player.

Like I mentioned before, love this signing. I think Ritchie can be huge for us. Ideally I’d like to see Kerfoot moved for another top six LW with size and a mean streak to play with Matthews and Nylander. Ritchie would look good next to Tavares and Marner.

so the guy that got $38.5 million has done better than the guy that got $5 million?

Now take into account their ice time and their linemates during that timespan, and I think that would narrow the gap considerably.

1. Even if the Leafs got the money, paying Hyman over 4mil is a brutal contract.

2. I don’t see the problem of having 3 10mil plus players being as big as a problem as now if they actually play on different lines.
They are getting paid over 10mils, they don’t need each other to be 10mil
players, they should be able to make 2mil players into 3-4mil players.
AM can score at will, does he needs someone like Marner to be a Rocket winner? More importantly do we need AM to be a Rocket winner to succeed? Would scoring 45 goals instead of 53goals in the regular season be that big of a different if his line goals output is still the same? For Ex.,Like with Marner and Hyman, AM’s line scored 85goals- with AM scoring 53. If AM scored 45goals while playing with Soup and Engvall but that line scored 80 goals, is that such a difference for the Leafs bc Marner might make Kerfoot and Richtie into 30 goals scorers on another line. Which is about 13-15 goals more than expected from both of them.

I'd argue Engvall should be viewed as a somewhat critical roster piece. He's one of their few depth players with positive defensive impact and can play center. He and Mik are subject to a lot of criticism, but their even-strength scoring rates are pretty on par with many more heralded players.

I like the Ritchie and Kase signings in that they just give Keefe more options.

Hyman is a great player, but it seems to me the book on the Leafs top line has been “mug them.”

Zach couldn’t make that painful for the opposition. Ritchie does. If he can keep up on line 1, that’s awesome. If not, line 2 is a possession beast. I like this signing. Our boys can skate a little mor assertively with Ritchie and Simmonds and Gabriel around. You can argue it shouldn’t be this way, but it is.
