yeah apparently ottawa made a 4 year offer for 2.5 per and paul wants or thinks he can get 3.0+

so unless someone caves he is probably getting traded

He could be a really useful support player for someone, it's too bad the Sens couldn't get a contract done.
I don't think its over. But not close enough that trading him is off the table. I'd still put the odds of a deal getting done at 20% or so... the gap cant be that big.

Paul OTT brother of Steve OTT

Hopefully Paul doesn't share the same signature move that his brother and Marchand do. The world is a different place now.

Should be interesting to see what he fetches. He's an UFA so contractually he's nothing like Hagel or even Lehkonen and I see him as a clear step down from the Hagel/Lehkonen/Copp cohort in terms of overall impact.

But he's big, positionally versatile, can PK and chip in a few goals. Any strong playoff team could use another guy like that.

Kind of weird that Ottawa won't give him a 5th year. At 2.5 or 3.0M, it's not like you wouldn't be able to move him later. But Melnyk/Dorion have some weird 12D level chess they think they're playing.

Meh, this isn't something to get too worked up about. We all like Paul, but he's not a pillar of the franchise.

3M is quite frankly too much for a 3rd/4th liner. Imagine having your 3rd line taking up 10 mill or so, especially on a currently bottom feeding team.

Sens don't want to overpay with Tkachuk and Formenton already ahead of Paul at LW, with Greig looking like a future stud who will also likely play LW and is maybe a year or two away.

No room for him at center either with Stutzle, Norris and Pinto all figuring into the Sens long-term plans.

They don't want to pay Paul 3M a year to play on the Sens' 4th line. Can't afford to do that as a budget team.

That's quite the assumption. Dorion signed a soon to be 29 year old Zack Smith to a 4 year deal at 3.25 per year but couldn't move him later. Took back Artem Anisimov to facilitate a trade. Nick Paul is soon to be 27. While younger, he isn't as good as Zack Smith was imo. They aren't playing chess, they have a limit they are willing to give a role player. I would be sad to see Nick Paul get traded but I also don 't want an overpaid bottom 6 winger.

I mean even at 2.5-3M there’s still a high possibility he ends up overpaid. Just maybe not as much as Smith.

The cap has went up since then, so Smith's 3.25M was a bigger chunk of the teams' cap. Plus, didn't his play fall off a cliff? Went from being a good 3rd line C to a bad 4th line C?
