Why would it need to have protection? The leafs aren't falling out of the playoffs in a years time

Tell me you don’t know the players without telling me you don’t know the players.

Danford projects like another Tanev not some number 6. He is a shut down guy who makes a good first pass. You look at stats and think you know the player. You obviously don’t.

Also Minten’s ceiling is a 2nd line center. Not a 4th liner.
Tanev...is a number 6 though?

I would rather bring in Evans than Brayden Schenn. Has a cap hit of 1.7. Has 1 less goal 9 less points than Schenn. Would be easier to obtain. If I'm trading top prospects and 1 rounders, it would be for a Brock Nelson before it would be for a Brayden Schenn. I would rather Pageau over Schenn as well.

Minten looks like his ceiling is fourth liner. Just no offensive instincts or ability. In juniors up to where he currently is. So not surprising he’s available. Same with a guy like Danford who at best looks like a number 6 who hits really hard, but I see a minor leaguer.

Minten is a safe bet to become an NHL regular. I see a bottom 9 forward.

Cowan's stock was much higher last year. It's dropped significantly. Every team has a guy or two like him in the system.

Gotta solve the cap situation first before thinking about trading any assets for anyone with salary.

Leafs have so many players with higher AAV's that they have to have 14 players on their roster making 1.35M or less. So moving the lower players out to "upgrade" on them is an impossibility. And 6 of the other 11 players all have full NMC's.

So you have a choice of Domi, Kampf, OEL, McCabe, and Woll to ship off so you can upgrade on them. And I'm assuming OEL and McCabe aren't moving, as well as Woll. So Domi or Kampf + asset + pick for an upgrade at forward that would cost 4-5M (ish) in AAV to bring on.

I know the numbers are weird cause of prorated and such. But that's the general issue.

I think the Leafs are more inclined to move Cowan anyway. Minten is exactly what the Leafs need now and he should be a full time 3C as of next season.
IMO Minten is closer to Poitras then a B level prospect.

-if you think Poitras is a B+ level prospect then fair

No, it hasn't. 65 game point streaks don't drop a players value.

To Chicago:
:hawks
-Fraser Minten

To Toronto:
:leafs
-Ryan Donato (@50% retention)
-2025 Dallas 2nd round pick
The Hawks already have several prospects that can provide what Minten offers, if not more; Greene, Moore , Boisvert etc.; they need a sure fire top six centre option. the package you are offering is essentially two 2nd round picks, Those assets would be better served filling other holes or combining and aiming higher.

First off the 65 game point streak wasn’t achieved solely this season, it started last year when his stock WAS higher.

Cowan has regressed this season, statically his production has dropped while playing for the top team in the OHL. Others around him have continued to progress and elevate their games (Dickinson, O’Reilly, Barkley etc) and he hasn’t. Factor in a dismal performance at the WJC where he really came across as a selfish player or someone who showed questionable decision making or low hockey IQ. He at times last season looked like a home run pick, there are definitely far more questions about him now.

I think the post yure replying to is definitely selling Danford a little short. I guess you can say Minten has a second line center, but he hasnt really shown anything at all to make you think he could be a top 6 NHL player at this point. Really pedestrian offence in junior and in the world juniors he was pretty bad in the minutes he was force fed. As part of a package? He can be a decent piece, but I think theres lots of teams where he might not even be in their top 5 prospects

Cowan would have significantly more value

It’s such a lazy surface level take.

Real hockey guys, would disagree. I’m pretty confident in that take.

Nah, you are just looking through your blue tinted glasses.

Not sure how you can suggest it’s a lazy take when someone makes the effort to compare Cowan’s performance year to year with his regular team, compare his performance to that of multi-year teammates with the same team AND then assess his performance in a different environment against higher level competition.

You didn’t get to read the flowery praise you wanted as a Leaf’s fan, so it’s “a lazy take”.

Minten I think realistically the Leafs believe can be a Cirelli 3rd line center. Basically a top end 3rd line center. He has all the tools for it (size, grit, willingness to engage physically, responsible defensively, hands not made of stone) and is a hockey nerd obsessed with studying the game. His floor is probably a Curtis Lazar type career.

I personally would rather keep him for that role and move Cowan who I think we can replace easier. We already have pretty good wingers and by far our best NHL ready prospects in the system are wingers after Minten.

Toronto should definitely be "all in" this TDL. So trading whatever futures/mediocre prospects they have to support their run is definitely something they should be pursuing.
