Player Discussion Nick Jensen (D)

His mobility is a big part of his game. At his age, I wonder if this could possibly lead to (LTIR) retirement. He is 35 in September.

It must be a difficult situation for Staios to navigate because our cap situation is still reasonably constrained. If there is a chance he will come back midseason, that means we have to set aside almost 5M in cap so that we can activate him, and when he returns there is no guarantee that he won't take time to regain his form.

LTIRetirement would be an easier situation to manage because while going into LTI has disadvantages, they would have some certainty about being able to allocate his cap on a replacement.

How many lower body injuries would be able to be played through but also require surgery and LTIRetirement after the surgery? Can't think of any.

Sure, maybe he isn't ready for camp, but doubt he has to retire from something he was able to play through for half a year.

I take this to be either ankle or knee.
You don't often hear about ankle surgery, unless it might have been a fractured tibia or fibula.
Thanks. I had a broken ankle in about 2010. It was called a Bimalleolar Ankle Fracture in my left ankle. Caused by slipping on ice on the street downtown.

I had a plate, 6 screws and a pin for exactly one year to hold the two bones together.

That is not what Jensen has.

I suspect a knee or groin injury for Jensen.

Or trade him when he's back from LTIR. I'm sure a team will take a chance and give up a 3rd round pick for a veteran RD with half a season and 2-2.5 mil remaining.

If Jensen is going to LTIR and miss all / half a season, we'd have 9 mil to spend. How much would we have to pay Ekblad? I know he gets hurt every year, but he almost never misses playoff games.

I doubt we move him, it would be a terrible message for the team. Play through pain for half a year, to help this group make the playoffs for the very first time, on something that needed surgery, and then get moved to SJ in the summer.
Also, having surgery suggests it's a problem that can be fixed as opposed to a chronic condition you have to manage for the rest of your playing career.
