Off topic but what the hell is the Detroit Red Wings long term plan? Sign Rangers castoffs and hope the journeyman goalie du jour that they sign turns into Matt Murray?

Steve Yzerman is the Jeff Gorton of Chris Drury's as a GM.
Yzerman's plan was the same as it was in Tampa.

Have three lottery picks and have a fistful of late-rounders turn into Hall of Famers.

As it turns out, it's not the most repeatable plan out there.

They should have stayed bad and kept stockpiling assets and talent. You're right, I don't know what that game plan is except to be mediocre.

Let's take advantage and send Trouba there next offseason.
It was taking too long without them being actual contenders or at the very least, a hockey team worth watching. They tried to incorporate some vets with their prospects/core. They had some prospects not take off and now the vets/depth signings are suppose to help carry the team, but they aren't good enough for that. So they're in this position where the few star/higher end players either win them the game, or they lose.

They were (I suppose still are) my second favorite team, but it's been a painful watch. If you don't get more star power and your prospects don't take off, you're going to have a hard time, especially since it's not really a landing spot every big fish player wants to go and play for. They also made some head scratching trades.

Last season, lots of folks here said you have to play Rempe, because he makes them win.

This season, it's the opposite.

yeah IMO they are just lacking some star power players to take over games and lead the team. Seider is great but everyone else kinda falls into that "pretty good" category right now. Maybe some guys can eventually transcend that but so far...eh

I think the notion was that he "gets the crowd going." For a playoff game at MSG.

You could show professional checkers at MSG in May and the roof would come off the place.

If Rempe is on the active roster he should be playing every night. If he isnt, he should be in Hartford. Brodzinski is barely an established NHL player even now, and doesnt kill penalties or play the PP. He shouldnt be playing over a prospect. Full stop.

For the same reason Lindgren is going right back in to the top pair when he is healthy and the same reason Mika has loafed around in the offensive zone for a year+, Rempe sits for an organization guy who does nothing. Too comfortable.

If Brodzinski is going to play on the 4th line, why not give him a look on the PK?

He has good speed and isn't terrible defensively.

how would you compare Raymond and Lafreniere, seeing both of them?

Re: "staying bad" there's an incredible irony here that the type of Vet players coaches love, guys like Copp, Chiarot, Perron, etc. (Reilly Smith?) can be both too good and too bad.
if a teams best interest in theory is to tank for a shot at elite ELC talent, they can buoy play and win games. If a team is trying to win, they're often past their prime and incapable of driving play at the level commensurate with their cap hit. cap hit is obviously not as much a concern, if at all, to tanking teams.

And yet he’s one of our best forecheckers.

He made a play last night where he was right behind the defenseman, and in less than a second had stripped him of the puck.
Being able to do that is elite defense.
It's not about Kakko's ability to kill penalties per se, he would probably be pretty good at that. Rangers are just one of those teams that see the PK as an opportunity to score on a shorthanded breakaway, and this is the reason you have Kreider and Zibanejad on the PK. They can skate and score.

yeah but that's only one aspect of their PK
Kreider and ZBad for the most part are the only ones really gunning for that all the time.
we had goodrow on the PK last year and he's not fleet of foot

Raymond is faster and drives to the dirty areas a lot more. I think Raymond has higher end skill but needs to do a lot more to get production vs Lafreniere who can get in the right place, do a lot less with the puck through-out the game and still find success on the stat sheet.

Larkin is also a much better playmaker than other fans give him credit for. Raymond's biggest issue was being reliable in his own zone. He's gotten better. I'm not sure if he's going to replicate 30+ goals again and shoot nearly 20% this season, but he should rack up another 15-20 points being on that top powerplay.

Laf's upside is still insane if he continues to improve.

If he gets better defensively, he's going to set himself up with even more rush chances.
I'm starting to see a guy who lots of people are going to still shit on because his physical skills still aren't amazingly standout (people seem to love fast, waterbug like players these days) but he's the kind of player that even when his passes aren't completely connecting they're made with intent and to the right place. He gets them through some crowds amazingly well at times and on target to the guy he's aiming for. He's judicious enough about when to pull a move and when to wait for teammate help, he plays physical along the boards and will go to the net without the puck, and can shoot it...

dunno, I think he's gonna be underrated soon by most of the leagues fans. He could put up 70 ES points this year and people will shit on him for not putting up 90+ for some reason

Interesting that you mentioned defensive side. It's faux pas to mention it but Lafreniere has been the cause for some of the goals against by not covering his assignment. Not saying that he's "skating exposure" but he's definitely can improve - like many I guess.

Oh, I'll take it further than that. He's wretched defensively.

I also don't care. He's 23 and his offense is developing. Defense is learnable. He can learn it after his peak.

He has tools to be good defensively. It's just not a focus right now and I don't particularly want it to be.

Except it was being said during the season, and some of them actually believed it.

David Quinn is rolling in his metaphorical grave in Pittsburgh.

Any talk of a trade is optimistic imo.

He's gonna come back and they're going with Lindgren-Fox and Miller-Trouba until the sun is black.

Laf shows flashes of understanding how to do well on defense. But yeah, he’s poor defensively.

His upside though, is all time ranger goal scorer, Hockey hall of fame, and potentially playing for team Canada at the Olympics(not necessarily the next one)
