A few months ago, Los Angeles Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi said that a few of the team's young prospects had "paid their dues" and had a job to lose with the Kings out of training camp in September. One of the players he was referring to was center prospect Nic Dowd, who was selected by the Kings in the seventh round, 198th overall, in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
As you've probably just noticed, not only is Dowd a seventh round draft pick, but he's also older than most young prospects. How did he last this long in the Kings' system? Why did the Kings stick with him? How did he make it this far?
