Niagara Icedogs 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

It doesn’t sound like the OHL is running the show if DD can hire the GM. What’s to say, he doesn’t say every qualified candidate is “too expensive”? He can just continue to say it until he finds yet another puppet that the OHL doesn’t do it’s homework on?

The more things change the more they stay the same.

How do we know that it was DD that said the price was too high. It very well could have beenthe league offices.

The challenge is we do not know who is running the team is it the league or is it DD.

My impression was that the league had taken over the team and that DD would only look after the front office and sign the cheques.

Again this process has been as clear as a cow patty.

Personally, I agree that DD lacks brains; however, I said the same thing and still feel that way about Springer in Kingston.

The difference was that when Springer was going to take over, he asked around for whom to hire and got advice from the league and other GMs.

Many new owners want to do things cheaply. The problem is that sometimes they go too far.

If the league can provide DD with a top-flight GM, then he will learn, like Springer. The difference between a good owner and a bad owner can sometimes be as simple as the GM. Ottawa had the cheapest owners with Earl and howard but they got lucky and found a guy names Kilrea who would not back down and knew what he wanted.

The new regime may surprise everyone and if it works with a GM that wants to stick around it could be a blessing.

Before we bring out the tar and feathers let's see what happens

… Need a GM fast…

For Context:
Dickinson (4th overall) 3x2nd 3x3rd 1x5th
Henry Brzust (22nd overall) 2x2nd 1x3rd

Edgar (10th overall) if traded you’d think would return somewhere between those 2 (3x2nd 1x3rd) or (2x2nd 3x3rd). That kind of return plus the comp pick wouldn’t be the end of the world but would be sad to see happen again… London doesn’t have the picks for it either way.

London, if interested, has until September to acquire those picks.

Kitchener, in the event one of those three teams is the Rangers, does have the picks.

One thing to think about. If Niagara hires Rob Simpson to be their general manager. And he is the guy making the trade in September, does he give London a break on the cost? Obviously, Simpson is going to do the job justice, and look to get the best return
possible, no matter which team he trades him too.

That’s not to say it won’t be in the back of Icedog fans minds.

if its simpson, and i think it is, i would be he gets him signed or makes him sit.

I thought the same. Is he perhaps saying they don't want to sign them after seeing them at rookie camp? The teams choice not the players. That would not be a good look.

sure, but dont just trade him cause he wants it.
If Simpson is the new GM, I would assume he spends the summer trying to convince him to sign. Team going in a new direction, etc. etc. etc.

That being said, if he cannot get him signed before the window in September, he’d be a fool not to declare him defected and trade his rights. It would be very hard to give up the assets trading him would bring along with the compensation first rounder.

No one knows better than Simpson having come from London. They risked William Moore being signed and at the end of the day, wound up with only a compensatory second round pick instead of the first round comp pick after holding onto his rights past the defected window.

just new info, i actually dont think simpson is the gm anymore, its a name that no one has mentioned previously

The player has all the leverage here. If you don’t trade him you lose a valuable asset and have little to show for your choice and that’s not good GM’ing by anyone’s standards. The player will get what he wants.

or he does what valentini did or moore did and find somewhere else to play. i personally didnt love him but hes a good player. its not like losing a dickinson.

So then who is it and does he actually have experience or has DD struck again with some cheap random that shouldn’t be a GM of a hockey team

Warren Rychel? His name was passed along to DD when he first bought the team but DD decided he could do a better job himself.

Marty Williamson’s name was surfacing as a potential GM, a few weeks ago, however, not sure if the recent shuffle in Barrie completely rules that out now?
