Niagara Icedogs 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

He’s got one more season (25-26) on a 3-year contract with Guelph. He’s definitely experienced with challenging ownership situations and has a longtime connection to the Branch family that goes back nearly 40 years when he installed Barclay Branch as a stick boy in Oshawa. Has Wade and Kyle in scouting roles in Guelph today. Even with the new OHL leadership, George remains well-connected and respected.

But I have no idea why he’d even consider the IceDogs gig at this point in his career.
Scott Walker and him do not get along

Just name the GM already. The person has to get to know the players and have some conversations. We are going to have some trading to do in the near future

Now that is an interesting point. Clearly a new GM is going to want to want to make adjustments.
Adjustments is the least of our worries. He is going to have to move the players that won't report to training camp. Those include but are not limited to: 1) Kevin He; 2) Ryan Roobroeck; and 3) Alex Assadourian. This is a mess right now but hopefully this change in Organizational Structure can change the route of the Titanic.

IF hes doing a legitimate hiring process and he’s interested in whoever it is from London then we’ll be waiting awhile and as much as I’d like a turek or Burnett someone who’s in and around the London setup might actually be what’s best for the team

4. Max Crete
5. Ivan Galiynov
…need to see some changes in the roster to return next season.

Turek to London as what? I can’t see him going from a GM to AGM
Mark and Dale hunter won’t be doing it forever. Dale turning 65 in July, Mark turning 62 in November. Turek 52.

As I predicted prior to the season- if Dale and Mark have a good year and win Mem cup which is very possible- maybe one or both of them retire on top.

However I can’t see mark retiring just yet- just dale. If mark is gm for a few years with Turek as an AGM(sure he still would get paid as he did in Brantford) Turek who is already a good GM would learn from the best in the business at the junior level.

turek will be with ottawa somehow, belleville or not

If it’s not Turek. Any idea about who knights may have lined up to take over reigns for when those guys retire or is that a discussion for a few years down the road?
it could be but everyone seems to think turek will be in belleville. if one of them leaves in a year or two simpson could just come back

It's out there that the Hunter's offered him a job right after Brantford and him parted ways.
I think the Hunters have a lot of respect for the work Turek has done.
I give him a lot of credit for sitting back and not getting involved in the buying spree that teams like Oshawa, Kingston, Barrie , Brampton went on the East just to get spanked by London in the final either way.

I think he has LOTS of offers but i know it was one of them.
It's definitely more likely he ends up running Belleville's AHL team.

I think there is a lot of room for this team to develop and get back to what it had before all this crap started.

As I have said the league is probably leary of a new owner. If the system and team are screwed up a neew owner is not going to make it better. Also the price is going to be based on the basement and DD maynot be able to get enough to pay the markers he has.

As to sponsorship, most of that does not depend on the owner, but it depends on the crowds and the on-ice product.

I can see a new GM coming in, no matter who it is, looking at this as a feather in their cap and the ability to develop a team that is already strong and has the power.

As to coaching, I still see a spot for Ben as the head coach. He knows the team, the players want to play for him, and it keeps their stars in Niagara. The new GM will have limits on Ben and be watching him. He is a rising star I think, in the coaching ranks.

DD tried it his way and failed. The league left him alone sort of and he did not grow. Therefore, they are going to step in and rebuild the team. He will have two choices: grow and learn, or not grow and learn, and have someone buy him out once the new team is functioning. BUT the new owners are going to be told that they can own the team but the GM will still be inlace and cannot be fired or undermined

Let's say by some miracle that DD sells the team over the summer. Team gets a respectable group to come in. Simpson is named GM and a decent coach is added. Would Niagara become a legit memorial cup host then? I'm sure the league would love to advertise the redemption arc story to go along with the location and venue.

I think competitively there are far better teams out there who are more deserving of hosting the Memorial Cup. Niagara has the arena and the fan base, but given its history the IceDogs are far from a showcase team.

New owner, new brand... try for the next, next bid.

Kitchener will try for it, but I think they are hoping to give it to an eastern team. Just not sure who has the team or arena

I think that if DD plays nice ( I don't see him selling this year), Niagara still has a good team, arena and fanbase.
