Niagara Icedogs 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

I heard yesterday that the OHL has decided on our new GM and that the OHL will be running the team next year. How long that extends, I did not hear that. The new GM has been quite successful as a gm in the OHL. It is not Matt Turek
Just wondering why the OHL thinks this GM change/addition changes anything as far as the change of ownership goes. How timid is the OHL in this transition? Postpones meaningful change & puts STHs in limbo as well.

If the OHL is taking over the hockey operations of the IceDogs, it’s likely there is no legal way for the league to force DD to sell the team. So instead the league takes over the hockey operations and puts pressure on DD to sell.

It’s definitely not ideal but at least the league is trying to force change. I think DD will eventually sell as he won’t want to keep the team if he is not in control.

Way off topic, I just ran 21.49km's and I can't feel anything. I can't stand up, I can't sit down, I can't think and I can't feel. All of this because I told my son I would run in the Ottawa Half Marathon. How dumb can one old f*** get.
Wow, that is good. I don’t think I could walk 21 km, never mind run it.

OHL met with DD yesterday; DD meeting with hockey ops today; either there is an official OHL announcement or information leaks in the days ahead.
Do you know if the OHL is taking over the hockey operations as rumoured? Or is that still to be determined.

NEW: The Niagara #IceDogs have relieved head coach Ben Boudreau of his coaching duties while the contracts of assistant coaches Dan Paille and Marc Slawson will not be renewed. Niagara will now begin the search for their 6th head coach since the 2021-22 season.Additionally, General Manager Wes Consorti will be transitioning to a new role of Executive Liaison beginning next season but will remain on as Interim, as the search will begin immediately for a new General Manager.Niagara’s organization was under a Cultural Review in the second half of the 2024-25 season from the #OHL where a league liaison was overseeing the team’s day-to-day operations. In Boudreau’s first full season as the bench boss, after taking over in November of 2023, he helped lead the IceDogs to their first playoff berth since the 2018-19 season with 29 wins after a combined 29 over the previous two seasons. Boudreau had previously been coach of the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL, where he led them to a Kelly Cup Championship in the 2021-22 season. No further changes as a result of the Review at this given time. #DogCountry

NIAGARA, ON – May 7th, 2025 — The Niagara IceDogs today announced a series of organizational changes following the completion of a comprehensive review led by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

As part of these changes, Owner and Governor Darren DeDobbelaer will step back from the day-to-day operations of both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Current General Manager Wes Consorti will transition to a new role serving as the executive liaison between Mr. DeDobbelaer and the club’s operational leadership.

Additionally, Head Coach Ben Boudreau has been relieved of his duties. The contracts of Assistant Coaches Dan Paille and Marc Slawson will not be renewed.

“I’m incredibly proud to own the Niagara IceDogs and be able to have this great franchise compete in the Ontario Hockey League,” said Darren DeDobbelaer. “While this season brought several challenges, our focus remains on building a positive and stable environment for our players, staff, and fans. These changes are part of our commitment to ensuring long-term success both on and off the ice. We sincerely thank Coach Boudreau, Dan Paille, and Marc Slawson for their dedication and for helping guide the team to its first playoff appearance since 2019.”

In collaboration with the OHL, the IceDogs will immediately begin the search for a new General Manager and coaching staff to lead the organization into its next chapter. Wes Consorti will remain the team’s interim General Manager until a new General Manager is appointed.

DD is no longer running the team. Best news I have heard in a long time.

sounds like he gets to keep the team and they bring in a new gm/coach. interesting to see who comes out of the wood work
So the league learned absolutely nothing from his last suspension? I could be wrong and hope I am but I don’t know how well this solves the teams problems

i would think that anyone who is hired will have the ability to call the league and say 'hes getting in the way again'. the league needs to approve whomever is hired it seems.

do they go experience or youth?

Like I said hope I’m wrong I just don’t feel like much can change as long as he’s still the owner and Wes has some part especially when it comes to the things involving $$ as for where they go if you want to try and give them the best chances at success you’d think they go experience

The circus continues. I was hoping we’d get a statement from the OHL stating for the best interest of the franchise and league, there is ongoing search for a new owner.

Instead, DD is still lurking in the shadows while his puppet Wes is still employed.

Not that players were going to report anyway, but good luck getting them without knowledge of who the coach or GM are going to be.

Who’s hiring the new coach? DD or his “interim” puppet?

Leave it to the OHL to leave everyone guessing. Why be transparent?

Ya, its really bad for getting and keeping players this off season. Unless we are going to hear next about the sale of the team I suppose.
