Niagara Icedogs 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

Not sure. Also, just to clarify, the off-ice suspension is until the end of the season, which could be as early as Thursday or possibly Saturday evening.
It sure seams like the players are taking the brunt of the punishment. Where was the ownership and coaching staff since day one of this ownership change. They should be punished for not emphasizing discipline from day one of each and every year and sit players when they misbehave. To think that the house party and the movie theatre are isolated events is naive. This type of behaviour has been happening since the ownership change.

I have heard of many occurrences of players breaking curfew and being drunk.

the coach is the one that is ignoring alot of it. he has two major issues as well that has hurt the organization, its not just the owner. its too bad because i think hes a pretty decent coach, just maybe not for teens.

Agreed. It is important that Ben speak with some CHL coaches to get a handle on the differences between coaching teens and coaching professionals. He has won championships so its important to keep a talented coach, however, not at the expense of developing our young players

After the third period comeback last night I gotta say I am pretty enthusiastic for the game this evening.

Who else will be there??

I’ll be at both as for the the teams chances we’ll see how being so close to completing the comeback plays on them usually when this team has a big effort like that the next game is a bit of a letdown

Yep, that has been the recent history. However, it seemed a little different last night. The video of Galianov on the bench after his second goal encouraging the team was something positive.

There is so much blame to pass around and it starts at the top.
This owner does not have the brains or enough money to run this team and his puppet GM does not have the experience to do it either.

It's so easy to point blame at the coach but he is not there to babysit poorly raised teenagers at movie theaters.
Getting through to teenagers has to be one of the most difficult jobs in the world in all honesty.
You throw in the fact that most of them are entitled kids with money that have been allowed to run free the last several years under minimal supervision and structure and it doesn't help.

I truly believe this team does not provide the necessities and resources involved in running a major JR team.
You can only have so many problematic kids on a team before it takes over the whole locker room and 16/17 year old's are pretty easily influenced.
They need leaders here on and off the ice and its more then obvious they have neither.

Standard has some details.

Josh Sweetland, with OHL communications, confirmed the sanctions were imposed following an incident during a showing of the spy thriller “Black Bag” at Landmark Cinemas at Pen Centre March 25. The Standard was told by a moviegoer the “absolutely egregious behaviour” involved yelling and “throwing food across the room.”
“Yes, your assessment is accurate regarding the movie theatre matter,” Sweetland wrote in an email. “There are no further penalties pertaining to this latest incident at this time.”

Honestly, this team can't get out of its own way and it runs through the whole organization from top to bottom. I don't know how someone fixes the issues that have plagued this team over and over...I came out to watch a few games this year and was surprised how the attendance has dropped off. Heard from a few season ticket holders that a lot of people have just had enough until this team can pull its #$#@ together. It's too bad because even in some weak years, fans used to come out and really support the boys but I guess the support drop off has less to do with performance and more with " everything else" . Hopefully the Icedogs can get it together.

If we were a winning team with all these off-ice issues we would have much higher attendance. The consecutive last place finishes is what caused STH's near me to give up their seats. Even I was questioning if I want to put up all that money and time for another bad season.

The Burke's weren't perfect but at least they knew when to buy and sell for the most part. They understood that being a mid market team in this league winning every year was not in the cards and set themselves up to make a run every 3 or 4 years.

If you ask the former STH, the vast majority of them would tell you it has little to do with winning.

OHL is cyclical and we all know that, support it and enjoy that part of the process. However, what we have witnessed over three years is not that..it has been a sh$tshow and will continue to be that as long as there is an incompetent and penny counting owner/GM who has absolutely no clue what he doing running the team.

I’ve said this before but IMO they were amazing owners up until the boys got to run the ship (mostly Billy as HC Joey was a fine GM) I would’ve been fine with/liked if they were still owners after the boys got in trouble if they agreed to not give them the jobs back

The only insider knowledge I have of the OHL,, that person told me that most teams hated the Burke kids. That there was a semi-public incident between Joey and another teams managers that was the talk of the league. This is several years back. Well before the main scandal became public. Back when we had a very competitive team.

I always figured it was sour grapes and rumour mongering. Then when the scandals broke publicly I figured it was all true.

I do appreciate that the Burkes brought the team to the city and were instrumental in getting the arena built.

What portion of the STH base would you say has no idea its a shit show? You would think its zero, but last IceDogs game I was at (last game Bulldogs were there) the season holder beside me seemed to have no idea.

Same question, but for the casual fan. I would think for the casual its more about wins and losses.

I’d say it’s 80-20 maybe even more for both. The STH 80% probably know/care about it 20% don’t know and only care about the Ws and Ls and a night out during the week the 80 might be higher with people who know but still go for a night out despite the W or L. As for the casuals it’s probably 80% about Ws and Ls and the night out and and 20 about the investigations and off the ice stuff

What kind of kids act like this in 2025? The kids I know playing junior hockey are focussed on playing pro or getting an education. And they know enough to realize how lucky they are to be playing junior hockey. They don't need coaches, owners or parents to tell them. Try drafting character players next time. And lose the head scout who only knows the GTHL and North York. He's a clown. I'm glad to see them swept in the first round. Hopefully they keep losing and move. They are an embarrassment

I have to say, not a big fan of this position. That market, with those fans, when properly run is good for the league.

Kids act like that when they have no structure or discipline. They act out when the adults in the room don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

These are all fans in this thread. Hoping they lose their team because the league allowed a sale to an obvious incompetent owner is definitely not cool.

What would them moving solve? This isn’t a market problem this is an ownership and his people problem thinking about it add branch and the league as a problem as well
